Coleg Cambria learners Dylan Morris and Henry Garner won the Young Enterprise North Wales event at Wrexham University, while the colleague partnered with the Mental Health Foundation and Colegau Cymru and hosted information sessions and fun activities for students and staff across its sites in Wrexham, Deeside, Northop and Llysfasi to mark Mental Health Awareness Week last month.

Innovative New Activewear

Dylan and Henry won the award thanks to their innovative new activewear and lifestyle brand, MountForce. They were victorious in the Judges Award and Company Programme categories. They went on to contest the Welsh finals in Cardiff, having impressed with their presentation and positive attitudes. The Level 1 Business, Travel and Events students are confident of future success. They are taking their start-up venture “to the next level”.

“We were up against A Level Business students from schools in North Wales, so we are proud to have won,” said Dylan, 18, from Wrexham. “We prepared a lot and worked hard to build up our brand before looking at the product, manufacturing and strategy. This ultimately paid off. However, there are some areas we will be looking to improve in time for Cardiff.

Henry, 17, from Penyffordd, added, “As well as the products, we want to build a community, a positive space for health and well-being, as well as sports and exercise. Our goal is not just to sell clothing; it’s to provide information, help our customers, and build momentum both online and offline.

Diligence, Creativity, and Dedication

Lecturer Viktoriya Hughes praised them for the diligence, creativity, and dedication they showed in preparing for the Young Enterprise event. She said, “Dylan and Henry worked hard and demonstrated a fantastic level of determination and commitment. This is a fantastic achievement for our students and a great representation of Coleg Cambria – well done to you both!”

Mental Health Awareness Week

“Warm Welcoming Environment”

Bethan Williams, Cambria’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Coordinator talked about the event to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. She said, “This campaign gives us a platform to demonstrate the work that takes place every week at Coleg Cambria. It is aligned to the warm, welcoming environment we have at the college.

Lizzie Stevens, Cambria’s Director of Inclusion and Progress, was very proud. She added, “The team and I have given talks, workshops and presentations across all our sites throughout the year. There is a lot of buy-in for our ‘culture of kindness’, people are behind us and want to create the best possible setting.”

In addition to a raft of sports, health and exercise classes held by the Wellbeing team and Active Cambria – notably Sleep Yoga, an Inclusive Duathlon, the DofE and promotion of physical activity amongst young females – there have been wellness days and events on themes, including exam stress, relationships, and ‘sleep hygiene’.

Cambriafest

Partner organisations and charities, such as Youth Cymru, Mind, WCD Young Carers, Advance Brighter Futures and the Samaritans were present. Papyrus, Stepping Stones, Riding for the Disabled, and Therapy Dogs also attended, with the latter especially popular with those struggling with anxiety and low confidence.

The annual Cambriafest of diversity and inclusion, organised by the Student Voice team, was a huge hit once again. Nearly 1,000 people enjoyed live music and entertainment in Deeside and Yale, Wrexham. Activities during the week included bracelet making, silent discos, and craft and sustainability workshops. There was also painting, songwriting, treasure hunts, willow basket making, mindful walks, stone decoration, gardening, and more.

A survey of attendees found 50% said it had a positive impact on their mental health. Seventy-five per cent felt it raised their spirits after the exam period, which can be stressful for many.
