National Eisteddfod 2024

The Wrecsam National Eisteddfod 2025 will be held at ‘The Maes’ in Is-y-Coed from 2nd to 9th August. From music to literature and from a full programme of competitions to Wales’ premier contemporary art gallery, there’s something for everyone at the National Eisteddfod.

Pentref Dysgu Cymraeg

The Pentref Dysgu Cymraeg is one of the most popular areas of the Maes. It will feature full and varied programme of events in Tipi Maes D: music, talks, drama, story sessions and entertainment, all suitable for learners in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Competitions for learners are held here on Thursday, so why not come along and support?

Sinemaes

The Sinemaes programme offers a taste of what it’s like to work in the media and film industry in Wales through a mixture of workshops, talks and screenings. Come and watch iconic films from the past and enjoy a series of short films about the area, selected and curated by the local community in Wrecsam.

Pentref Plant

The Pentref Plant will provide activities for pre-school and primary children. Its ethos is simple – a place for children to be children and come and have fun. They want children to put away their phones and video games. They can then come and play, make new friends and create a community of children on the Eisteddfod Maes.

With a packed programme of fun events, from tug of war to hobby horse racing, and all kinds of silly games, it’ll be a fun space for children and families.

“Eisteddfod”

The best photo on the Maes! The huge letters spelling out the word ‘Eisteddfod’ were the result of the team in the Eisteddfod in Llanybydder. They’re now the most popular image of the Maes and are seen widely on screen, online and across social media. The bright red letters have become internationally known as the visual symbol of the festival.

Y Babell Lên

The Literary Pavilion – or Y Babell Lên – is probably the most famous building on the Maes after the Pavilion.  It’s been part of the Eisteddfod for well over half a century. The pavilion has also been home to generations of poets and writers keen to make their mark at the Eisteddfod.

There are various types of sessions at Y Babell Lên every year. You can attend lectures and discussions, as well as lighter presentations and sessions reminiscing about literary figures and famous locals. It’s possible that Y Babell Lên’s most famous session is the Ymryson. This is a poetry competition held daily with teams of poets from different parts of the country battling it out in a wide range of competitions.

Theatre and Dance

The Eisteddfod is renowned for its high-quality and ambitious street theatre and dance programme, which runs across the Maes throughout the week.

Don’t miss “Mari Ha“. This is an exciting work that combines dance, design, and music in a groundbreaking way. It celebrates the power of nature to bring people together and create community and culture, brought to the Eisteddfod by the team behind Qwerin.

Llwyfan y Maes

Starting early and finishing late, the Llwyfan y Maes (open-air stage) is by far the most popular spot on the Maes.

As night falls, Wales’ biggest bands and artists perform. However, but there’s also room for all kinds of local performers on the Llwyfan. Each day begins with a performance by a choir and brass band from the Eisteddfod area, followed by new or local bands.

There’s a unique atmosphere at Llwyfan y Maes. You’ll find a friendly mix of families and people of all ages enjoying the music and a chance to socialise in the sun. This is our language’s biggest stages, with a coveted slot on the programme a thrill for every band and performer.  Come along and enjoy!

Buses
A wide network of public buses will run throughout the day. More information is available at cymraeg.traveline.cymru.

TrawsCymru service T3 will serve the Maes every two hours from Wrecsam Bus Station.

A free shuttle bus service will run between the train station, the bus station in the city centre and the Maes from 8am until midnight. These buses are low-level vehicles, suitable for wheelchairs and also allow dogs.
