A pupil from Ysgol Acrefair has won Cefn Community Council’s #StayOnSide project poster competition.

Raising Awareness

Cefn Community Council is proud to announce that Poppy from Ysgol Acrefair has been named the winner of this year’s #StayOnSide Community Project poster competition.

Poppy’s poster focuses on raising awareness of dog fouling. It was selected by the Council’s Development Committee and ratified by the Full Council as the winning design. Her poster will now be proudly on display at all 12 dog fouling stations across Cefn, Acrefair, Cefn Mawr, Plas Madoc, Newbridge and Rhosymedre.

The competition formed part of Ysgol Acrefair’s involvement in the #StayOnSide programme. This initiative continues to inspire community engagement across North Wales.

Taken by Surprise

The award took Poppy by surprise. She revealed, “I was in disbelief that my poster won against the other brilliant ones in my classroom. I’m really proud that so many people will see my work in our community.”

Chairman of Cefn Community Council, Cllr Phil Vaughan, praised Poppy’s achievement. He said, “This project shows how our schools and communities can work hand in hand. Poppy’s poster will leave a lasting legacy across our villages. It will remind everyone that small actions, such as picking up after your dog, make a big difference. She should be very proud.”

Strength to Strength

Andrew Ruscoe, Community Development Officer and #StayOnSide programme creator, added, “In nine years of delivering #StayOnSide, it has gone from strength to strength. Never in my life did I imagine that other councils would roll it out, such as Llanelli Town Council, or leave a lasting mark here with dog fouling posters displayed next to our stations. It is more than an honour.

This project brings pride to the community. Thanks to young people like Poppy, her family will now have proud memories whenever they walk past these stations. I hope this achievement also inspires other Community Councils and agencies to enquire about #StayOnSide. I would love to see the project delivered across Wrexham and Wales to help tackle antisocial behaviour. It would also reduce isolation, increase physical activity, and ultimately keep our streets clean.”

Cefn Community Council would like to congratulate Poppy on her fantastic achievement and thank Ysgol Acrefair for their continued support of the #StayOnSide programme.
