Coleg Cambria has celebrated a series of standout achievements across engineering, hospitality and advanced skills development. From international humanitarian work to award-winning bakery innovation and major regional investment, students and staff continue to push boundaries. Together, these stories highlight ambition, collaboration and a strong commitment to shaping North East Wales’ future workforce.

Georgia Ellams

Ghana Project

A Wrexham apprentice will represent the UK on a humanitarian project in Ghana this Christmas. Georgia Ellams is one of just 20 young people selected nationwide. She studies as a first-year Airbus Degree Apprentice at Coleg Cambria.

Georgia earned the prestigious Scouts of the World Award. She will spend two weeks in Accra supporting community projects. These may include teaching first aid, improving clean water access or helping build schools.

Importantly, she will fundraise for all project materials before travelling. Georgia attended St Joseph’s High School and Ysgol Dinas Brân. She now combines academic study with hands-on aerospace training.

Driven by Engineering and Scouting

Georgia hopes to pursue a career in aerospace engineering with the RAF. Meanwhile, she serves as a Scout Leader in Wrexham. She also leads the 14–24 team for the district.

She credits Scouting with building her confidence and resilience. Previously, she represented the UK at the World Scout Jamboree.

Georgia said the apprenticeship route gave her the perfect start. She feels proud to combine engineering ambition with community service.

Iâl Bakery Innovation

Student Creation Wins National Recognition

A student-led Irish Coffee Slice has earned national recognition. British Baker named it one of 2025’s most innovative products. Coleg Cambria developed the slice with Bako and Wright’s. The indulgent bake features vanilla sponge, coffee caramel and Irish cream. However, its real story lies in its journey to market.

Apprentices Naomi Griffiths and Ella Muddiman created the recipe at Iâl Bakery. Through the Bako Young Baker Initiative, they took it from concept to commercial production.

From Classroom to Nationwide Shelves

The project gave both students rare industry experience. They tested, refined and scaled their recipe for factory production. As a result, customers now enjoy their creation nationwide.

Both apprentices study for a Level 3 Diploma in Baking Proficiency. Naomi recently won Rising Star at the Baking Industry Awards. Meanwhile, Ella received the Hugh Weeks Award.

Maria Stevens praised their creativity and commitment. Furthermore, profits from the product range will support future young bakers.

Advanced Skills Hub

Major Investment for North East Wales

Coleg Cambria and Wrexham University will launch a new Advanced Skills Hub. Medr has backed the joint venture with significant funding.

The partnership will transform skills delivery across North East Wales. It will focus on digital innovation, green skills and advanced manufacturing. In addition, it will support health, construction and cybersecurity.

The Hub will serve employers across Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham. It will align training directly with regional economic priorities.

Driving Regional Growth

Employers will access apprenticeships from Level 2 to Level 7. They will also benefit from micro-credentials and workforce upskilling programmes.

Yana Williams said the Hub will unlock opportunity and talent. Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Joe Yates described it as a game-changer. Nick Tyson said strong cooperation will drive long-term success. The Hub aims to launch officially by September 2026.
