Should you renovate your bathroom entirely, or does it really need a big, expensive overhaul? And what is the right decision?
Both things are worthy considerations, but honestly, you likely don’t need a huge bathroom renovation. Just an update on some of the smaller features, so you can give it a facelift and a good refresh without investing in a new suite.
So what exactly can you or should you replace in your bathroom to make it feel like a brand new space, or at least one you enjoy spending time in now?
Replace the Toilet Seat
Your toilet seat is one of those parts of the bathroom that takes the most direct contact. It is used frequently throughout the day, and if you have multiple members of the household using the same toilet, it’ll succumb to wear and tear sooner rather than later and as soon as it starts failing, you’ll notice it immediately. From pinching your skin to moving when you sit on it, it’s not fun.
A good swap here is pan-specific seats for your toilet. They are designed to fit specifically with the pan you have, not just a generic fit. This means you get increased durability and stability. For example,e the Duravit Starck 3 SOFT CLOSING TOILET SEAT AND COVER WITH FITTINGS / 00638900 is the correct replacement for a Duravit Starck 3 pan as you get the right fittings and it’s easy to fit.
Recaulk The Bath and Basin
Silicone sealant around the bath and basin can yellow over time or go grey. From here, it’ll crack regardless of how well the surface is cleaned. But once it reaches this point, you need to remove the old caulk completely using a Stanley knife and a scraper. Once the old caulk is removed, you need to clean and dry the surface before applying a steady bead of sanitary-grade sealant. Once applied, smooth it with a wet finger and leave it or 24 hours before getting it wet. It’s a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive fix, but it’ll make the whole room look and feel better.

Regrout The Tiles
Over time, grout darkens, and with moisture, soap residue and cleaning products, the deterioration of your grout can feel accelerated, and at some point, no amount of scrubbing can reverse it.
But you can make it look and feel better by regrouting the most visible areas. This is around the bath, in the shower or on the splashback. This makes the tile scheme look considerably fresher and cleaner and brings everything back to life. If you want, you can change the colour of the grout; black is a popular choice right now.
Replace Basin Taps
This one is a bit more of an extensive task to perform. However, taps that have limescale at the bottom of them or have a dull or pitted finish aren’t going to make your bathroom look appealing, no matter how much you clean them.
If this sounds familiar, then it might be time to upgrade your taps. Find ones you like that fit your style, and you can have them fitted by a plumber, or pull up a YouTube video and teach yourself how to change taps. Don’t forget to turn the water off before you start to avoid a flooding disaster.
