As demand for specialist care rises, Nightingale House Hospice continues to find innovative ways to connect with communities across North Wales and the border counties. From high-energy fundraising runs and prestigious art exhibitions to vital new financial initiatives, local people and organisations are stepping up to secure the future of palliative care across the region.

Launching the Hospice Care Fund

One of the most critical developments for the charity is the launch of the new Hospice Care Fund. Created to help Nightingale House manage soaring running costs and a growing number of patient referrals, the fund ensures the hospice can continue providing free, specialist palliative and end-of-life care.

The fund will directly support families across Wrexham, Flintshire, East Denbighshire, and surrounding areas by funding:

  • Advanced pain management and medical care
  • Wellbeing services and complementary therapies
  • Specialist medical equipment
  • Comprehensive family support systems

“The fund will help ensure patients continue to feel safe, supported, and cared for during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.” — Dr. Adrian, Medical Director at Nightingale House Hospice

Real Impact: Angie’s Story

The true value of this community support is seen in the lives of the patients who walk through the hospice doors. Angie Jones was referred to Nightingale House in 2021 following a cancer diagnosis. Through tailored physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and the hospice wellbeing programme, she was able to regain her mobility and her confidence.

For Angie, the hospice became a vital “safety net” that empowered her to live as well and as fully as possible.

Lacing Up for the Nightingale House 5k and 10k

Fundraising events remain the heartbeat of the organisation. On April 18, runners, families, and supporters will lace up for the annual Nightingale House Hospice 5k and 10k event. The race serves a dual purpose: raising essential funds and offering a space for the community to honour loved ones.

  • Ellie Frederiksen is taking part in memory of her sister, Emma, who passed away in 2024, recalling how the hospice provided a safe, supportive sanctuary for her sister.
  • Kellie Hughes has already raised over £2,000 in memory of her father, Brian, describing the hospice environment as a calm and compassionate lifeline during her family’s most difficult period.

Culture and Community Connections

The fight to secure hospice funding is also getting a creative boost. At the end of this month, the Ellesmere National Art Exhibition returns to Ellesmere College in partnership with the hospice.

The exhibition will showcase a stunning mix of established and emerging talent, featuring works from:

  • Graham Cox, RCA
  • Barbara Goolden
  • Stephanie Eufemia (Landscape Artist of the Year finalist)

Supporting Regional Wellbeing

Beyond fundraising, wider community groups are focusing on the mental and social wellbeing of regional residents. The North Wales & Chester Oddfellows recently announced a brand-new season of social events, guided walks, and group trips. These initiatives are designed to combat loneliness, help people meet others, and explore local communities together.
