We’re sure many of you have questions about the background to the City of Culture bid. Here we provide you with some answers.

Walking around Wrexham (or Wrecsam), it is hard to miss the colourful UK City of Culture logo designed to promote Wrexham’s City of Culture 2025 bid.

The splash is said to represent coal dust, while the multiple colours represent the diverse and vibrant communities of Wrexham. Being the only region in Wales through to the long list, we have used the Welsh spelling of “Wrecsam”.

City of Culture” is a UK government competition for regions to become a focus for culture and bringing tremendous opportunities and investment. 2025 will be the first time the competition has been open to non-cities (four of the eight on the longlist are not cities, Wrexham also being one of them). Applying to become City of Culture does not mean you are the best at culture in the UK. You must demonstrate a solid base of creatives and community culture. Hosting could lead to massive investment and positive changes.

Where Is the Competition up To?

We submitted the second round of paperwork arguing why Wrexham should host in 2025 on 2nd February. We should know who has made the final three on the shortlist week commencing 21st March 2022. The winner will be announced in May.

Wrexhamites still need to be banging the drum in the region and gaining support for the bid. If you are a business or an organisation and would like more information on becoming an ambassador or stakeholder, contact wrecsam2025@wrexham.gov.uk

Individuals are also encouraged to share their thoughts and support for the bid on social media using the hashtag #wrecsam2025.

Is Culture for Everyone?

The meaning of culture can be different for everyone. Wrexham’s vision as hosts includes celebrating our cultural diversity and becoming the UK Capital of Play. It involves being the home of football in Wales, the North Wales centre for trade and events, leaders in innovation and celebrating the Welsh language and our heritage.

Is It Expensive to Attend?

City of Culture provides a range of events that appeal to all tastes and pockets. Tŷ Pawb exemplifies this idea by continuing to offer a wide range of activities and events that bring culture to life and make it exciting for all.

Backing the Events

We have asked communities around Wrexham County for input and ideas on our year as hosts. Up to £1,000 of funding is available for events and activities between February and May to promote our bid. There has been an overwhelming community response, with over 50 grants awarded. The team will announce these events and activities soon. Keep your eyes peeled for the #wrecsam2025 hashtag for more details.

You can also have your say on how you would like the year to look by searching online for “Your Voice Wrexham” and answering a few #wrecsam2025 survey questions.
