Local Charities - Award Winners, Worthy Causes and Keeping You Warm!

Our local charities are hard at work in the community as usual.

Groundwork North Wales

On a fantastic night at the Swansea Arena, Groundwork North Wales won the award for best Environmental Social Enterprise at the annual 2022 Social Business Wales Awards. CEO Karen Balmer also scooped the Women in Social Business award for overseeing the organisation’s development into one of the UK’s top-performing social enterprises.

Karen said: “Groundwork North Wales’ strength rests in our people and our approach. We find solutions to improve the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of our communities”. Hope House

The Hope House 2022 Bumper Christmas Raffle has stunning prizes of L6,000, L2,500 and L1,500. By taking part, you will be directly supporting children like Freya. Freya was born with a life-threatening condition consistent with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy and cerebral palsy.

Freya’s mum Georgie says: “Freya isn’t expected to live a full life, and we just don’t know how long we have got with her. It does make us value every day more and want to get the best out of every moment. But there is no way we could do that without the help of the Hope House team – they really are amazing.” Contact Hope House at 01691 671 999 or go to hopehouse.org.uk.

AVOW

Members of the public can take shelter from the winter weather by calling into Shopmobility Wrexham at 23 King Street to get warm, have a hot drink, and talk to friendly staff from the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW). Free tea and coffee will be on offer, with biscuits provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The service is available on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm.

AVOW’s Chief Officer, Dawn Roberts-McCabe, said, “Anyone needing a warm, safe space this winter is welcome at Shopmobility Wrexham – please do call in!” If members of the public wish to share why they need a warm space, AVOW staff will listen and signpost where possible. Their staff can also provide contact details of organisations offering support with the cost of living.

Advance Brighter Futures

Advance Brighter Futures offer Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training courses. One of their clients explains how setting up a team of mental health first aiders has benefitted their company and staff: ‘Advanced Brighter Futures have been excellent partners in helping me set up an MHFA team. I also like the fact that they are a local charity. The team were very proactive in using their skills to help numerous colleagues. They also assisted in setting up drop-in sessions and organise a Mental Health Awareness Day. “The team at ABF couldn’t have been more helpful and supportive. Our staff thoroughly enjoyed the course and found the presentation style and content excellent. I would highly recommend ABF.” Go to advancebrighterfutureswrexham.co.uk and click “Read here” to learn more about the training courses.
