Wrexham AFC Go Transatlantic – Wrexham AFC’s recent League One clash with Barnsley went transatlantic when it was chosen by the “Reality Technology” experience called Cosm.

Imax on Steroids

Cosm is a high-technology cinema-type experience you might call “Imax on steroids“. The screen makes you feel as though you’re actually sitting in the front row of the event you’re watching. The super high definition and full-wall (and beyond) screen gives you an incredible “wraparound” view of the sporting spectacle while watching from an indoor location that (one day, maybe) is close to you.

Those technically-minded readers might appreciate the following. The screen inside the main seating area is called “The Dome”. Its compound curved LED technology features an 87-foot diameter, fine-pitch LED display with a horizontal resolution of 12k and a vertical resolution of 10k.

Rob McElhenney posted images from the game inside the arena. It is located on District Drive in the Los Angeles borough of Inglewood, just next to the home of The LA Clippers basketball team. He’d invited a star-studded list of friends, including his wife Kaitlin Olson. Other It’s Always Sunny regulars Danny DeVito, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton also attended. Ryan Reynolds was not present.

“I Am Not in Wales”

McElhenney posted a video on X showing the players warming up before the game and then panning 360 degrees round the
venue
showing the fair-sized audience readying themselves for the occasion. As the camera returns to Rob, he says, “I am not in Wales”, before raising a trademark quizzical eyebrow.

In another video on Instagram, you can clearly see the projection of a huge Wrexham crest on the domed ceiling as the game ends and the players are celebrating the last-gasp victory. McElhenney is also clearly visible going along the front row and high-fiving his companions. Someone towards the rear of the auditorium is even holding up a card that says “Up The Town”!

There were mixed reactions to the post. Alf.baker1981 said, “Watching one of the oldest traditional clubs that’s been on its knees and struggling for years… enjoying special times for there (sic) fans is what football is all about… surely… enjoy it Wrexham”.

However, elwerowero wasn’t convinced about the post and countered with “I feel sorry for Wrexham fans. Success comes at a price, and this is it. The club has sold its soul…”.

Nlwhappysoul was much more positive about her experience at Cosm and said, “It was a great moment and @cosmlosangelesca was an incredible experience!!!!! gowrexham”.

Whatever your thoughts may be on the live cross-Atlantic transmission of a football match in Wrexham to a state-of-
the-art “shared reality” experience, Cosm selecting the game as part of their schedule, is just yet another indication of the kind of celebrity status our local football club has attained in the last few years.
