Wrexham AFC brought the curtain down on their pre-season tour of the United States with a 1–0 defeat to Premier League side Sunderland at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.

The fixture held extra significance given the stadium’s location just outside Philadelphia – the home city of Wrexham co-chairman Rob McElhenney – and a sizeable Red Wall contingent made the trip to cheer the side on in the summer sunshine.
Wrexham pushed forward looking to break down a well-organised Sunderland defence.
The breakthrough came just before the half-hour mark, when Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele finished neatly into the bottom corner after good hold-up play from Brian Brobbey. Wrexham thought they had levelled minutes later when Kieffer Moore turned home from close range, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Wrexham searched for a way back into the game but couldn’t find a route past the Sunderland goalkeeper.
Phil Parkinson’s side faded after the break and couldn’t find an equaliser, falling to their second consecutive 1–0 loss following a similar result against Liverpool in New York earlier in the tour. It was, on the whole, a disappointing note to end on after a largely encouraging summer that had seen Wrexham draw with Wisła Kraków and beat Manchester United.
Young Red Wall supporters were out in force under the Pennsylvania sun.
Wrexham’s travelling fans made themselves heard throughout, with Welsh pride on full display at Subaru Park.
Attention now turns back across the Atlantic, with Wrexham’s first competitive fixture of the new season – a Carabao Cup first-round tie against Middlesbrough – just around the corner.
