Ysgol Rhiwabon - Song for Wrexham winners

Wrecsam, Dwi’n Dy Garu Di! – Ysgol Rhiwabon has won a competition after submitting a contribution to A Song for Wrexham, a musical piece celebrating the area’s heritage and future.

A Verse And A Rap

The Song for Wrexham project was a competition that invited the pupils of every local high school to create and perform a verse and a rap about what Wrexham means to them. The song, created by Wrexham Music Co-operative, is the result of months of work, including workshops held at every secondary school in Wrexham. Ysgol Rhiwabon’s winning verse and rap earned them £1,000 worth of musical instruments.

A Song for Wrexham honours the region’s coal mining and steelmaking past. It highlights local landmarks like the distinctive red brick of Ruabon and St Giles’s Church. The song also acknowledges the rising success of Wrexham AFC.

Sandra Tarver, curriculum leader for music at Ysgol Rhiwabon, said: “We love that the school has won the competition. It was very evident the students care deeply about their community and you can see that in the lyrics. The end result is fantastic.”

“Many thanks to the members of the music cooperative for coming into the school and making this all happen. It was a wonderful opportunity for us all to take part in. The students absolutely loved the whole process.”

“An Amazing Effort”

Wyn Pearson, Wrexham Music Co-operative’s artistic lead, said, “We put a verse and a chorus together and invited every secondary school to write their own verse and a rap to go with the song. Every student involved at Ysgol Rhiwabon played a part. It was an amazing effort.”

Councillor Mark Pritchard, leader of Wrexham Council, said, “The video, music and lyrics are wonderful. I can see why it’s called A Song For Wrexham. I’d like to congratulate Wrexham Music Co-operative and Ysgol Rhiwabon for the work they’ve put into the project. Things like this really do showcase the best of Wrexham.”
