Ysgol Rhiwabon had an active June – their headteacher met King Charles, and they were on hand to welcome former Wrexham Mayoress Beryl Blackmore. They topped off things with a VE Day party.

Beryl Blackmore

Former Mayor Beryl Blackmore and consort, Mrs Dorothy Lloyd, visited Ysgol Rhiwabon last month. They enjoyed several musical performances, the highlight being the school singing a “Song for Wrexham”. The school choir had won the Song for Wrexham competition (see love-wrexham.com/2025/03/09/wrecsamdwin-dy-garu-di) organised by Wrexham Music Co-operative in late 2024, and the song has featured in several promotion films about Wrexham.

Headteacher Melanie Ferron-Evans attended a Buckingham Palace garden party in May when His Majesty The King approved a garden party supported by the Department for Education, to recognise and celebrate those working in education across the United Kingdom. For the last 20 years, YR has been a member of the Prince’s Teaching Institute, founded by the King when he was Prince of Wales.

VE Day Party

The History department threw YR’s very own VE Day street party last month. Students were able to help themselves to wartime snacks and activities to mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War. The school was decorated in bunting and Union Flags to commemorate the occasion, while students learnt about the importance of remembering the dedication and sacrifice of those who served. At noon, the school joined the country in holding a two-minute silence.
