Sam Rowlands has been backing the city of Wrexham and the Wrecsam2029 bid in the Senedd. The Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales is calling on the Welsh Government to back Wrexham in the upcoming bid for the next UK City of Culture.

City of Culture

Attracting Investment

Speaking in the Senedd, Mr Rowlands has been strongly backing the city when it bid for the honour in 2022. He said, “It would be fitting for Wrexham to be the city of culture, which has the potential for being transformative for the city by creating jobs, attracting investment and leaving a legacy for the future as well. First Minister, I’m really pleased to hear your support, in principle, at this point, for a bid from Wrexham.

However, there would be a request for some specific investment support from the Welsh Government in particular around infrastructure, and especially infrastructure that the Welsh Government would have responsibility for.“

Mr Rowlands asked First Minister Eluned Morgan if she could commit to the City of Culture Wrexham’s bid for this type of investment, so that it can succeed in the future. Wrexham narrowly missed out to Bradford in becoming the UK City of Culture for 2025, and plans are already in place to bid for the title for 2029.

“So Close”

Mr Rowlands added, “They were so close to becoming UK City of Culture previously. I really do wish them all the best for 2029. I also hope that the Welsh Government will support their bid. This will also help tourism and the wider economy in Wrexham and North Wales.”

The formal bidding process for 2029 is yet to open. However, the new “Wrexham Community & Culture Trust” has been established to put everything in place. They can hit the ground running as soon as it does.

Wrexham AFC

“A City On The Up”

Sam also congratulated Wrexham AFC on their promotion for the third consecutive season. Mr Rowlands, a keen football supporter, joined the First Minister in congratulating Wrexham football club for its back-to-back promotions.

He said, “Wrexham is clearly a city on the up. I would like to congratulate Wrexham Association Football Club on their fantastic achievement over the past three years. Their remarkable and well-deserved journey has led to their promotion to the Championship.

Transformative Investment

“Last Saturday’s game against fellow promotion-chasing rival, Charlton Athletic, saw them gain an automatic promotion place. This is great news for the club and the city. The players and staff are writing a new chapter in the club’s history. However, it is not just on the pitch that Wrexham is making strides forward; the transformative investment is also evident. The backing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has helped rejuvenate the city of Wrexham and North Wales.

“Everywhere I go in the city, people are talking about the football club. The economic potential impact on the area is huge. Even now, Wrexham continues to attract global interest. I sincerely hope that the Welsh Government continue to grasp this opportunity to support tourism and the wider economy in Wrexham and North Wales.”
