Do You Know July 2025 is full of weird and wonderful facts about bamboo, honey and, most head-scratchingly of all, ant-manipulating fungus. Scary!

Is That Honey Past Its Sell-By-Date? Probably Not!

  1. Sloths can hold their breath longer than dolphins.
  2. Plants “talk” to each other using chemical signals through roots and the air.
  3. Honey never spoils. Archaeologists have found pots of it in ancient Egyptian tombs – still edible.

  1. The average cloud weighs about 450 tons.
  2. Some lizards can squirt blood from their eyes as a defence mechanism.
  3. Crickets’ chirp rate can be used to estimate temperature – a phenomenon known as Dolbear’s Law.

Scary Fungii

  1. The ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus turns ants into “zombies” to spread its spores. Just watch the first scene of The Last of Us for a rather chilling explanation: ‘There are no treatments for this. No preventatives. No cures. They don’t exist. It isn’t even possible to make one.”
  2. Sharks are older than trees. Sharks have existed for over 400 million years – trees for about 350 million.
  3. The salamander-like axolotl can regenerate entire limbs, parts of its brain, and even its heart.
  1. Birds are the closest living relatives of dinosaurs, especially theropods like the T Rex.
  2. A teaspoon of a neutron star would weigh more than Mount Everest.
  3. The sun is actually white, not yellow – it just looks yellow through Earth’s atmosphere.

Those Bacteria Are Heavy, Man

  1. Some frogs survive being frozen solid. They thaw out in the spring.
  2. Bacteria are the largest biomass on Earth, surpassing the combined biomass of all plants and animals.
  3. Lightning strikes the Earth over eight million times each day.

  1. A bolt of lightning can contain up to one billion volts of electricity.
  2. Glass is 100% recyclable. It can be endlessly recycled without any loss of quality or purity. Recycled glass can be substituted for up to 95% of raw materials, and 80% of the glass recovered is made into new glass products.
  3. Some trees can “clone” themselves for thousands of years, like the Pando aspen grove.

Where’s That Bamboo Come From?

  1. The world’s fastest-growing plant is bamboo – it can grow three feet in 24 hours.
  2. The Amazon River once flowed in the opposite direction.
  3. The moon has moonquakes – some caused by Earth’s gravitational pull.

  1. Lakes can explode. Lake Nyos in Cameroon experienced a similar event in 1986 due to a build-up of CO2.
  2. The deepest part of the ocean, Challenger Deep, is deeper than Mount Everest is high.
  3. Some algae have built-in sunscreen to protect them during the summer months. Algae produce over half of the Earth’s oxygen.

Never Cross a Crow!

  1. A single strand of spider silk is stronger than steel of the same diameter.
  2. Saturn’s rings are made mostly of ice particles and are only a few hundred metres thick.
  3. A sunflower isn’t a single flower – it consists of hundreds of tiny flowers in one head.

  1. Raindrops are not tear-shaped. They are more like hamburger bun shapes while falling.
  2. The human brain is 75% water and uses about 20% of your body’s energy.
  3. Crows mate for life. They are very smart birds who can make tools and hide their food. These birds also have regional dialects and hold grudges. They remember human faces for years!
