Liz Rowlands, Menopause and Workplace Wellness Advocate, discusses five ways to make a more menopause-friendly workspace.
A Key Workplace Well-being Issue
People are finally recognising that menopause is a key workplace wellbeing issue – and for good reason. Around 75% of people going through menopause experience symptoms that affect their daily life, and many say it impacts their confidence and ability to work. Yet, stigma and silence remain common.
As someone who delivers menopause training in workplaces across the UK, I’ve seen how small actions can make a big difference. Wrexham businesses have a real opportunity to lead the way – creating inclusive, supportive cultures that retain talent and reduce absenteeism.

Why this matters for your business
– 1 in 4 women consider leaving work due to symptoms
– 2 in 3 don’t feel comfortable discussing menopause with their manager
– 72% of menopausal working women feel unsupported in the workplace
– Many are at the peak of their experience and leadership, and losing them hurts business continuity and recruitment.
Creating a menopause-friendly workplace is about culture, awareness, and empathy.
Five practical ways to get started:
1. Start the Conversation
Break the silence. Include menopause in well-being check-ins, team meetings, or staff newsletters. Make it a normal topic, not a taboo. A great first step is to run a menopause awareness session for all staff – it builds understanding, reduces stigma, and shows you take the issue seriously.
2. Train Your Managers
Most want to help but aren’t sure how. A session on symptoms, support, the law, reasonable adjustments and how to start a conversation equips managers to handle conversations with confidence and care.

3. Create a Menopause Policy
A clear, simple policy outlines how staff will be supported – covering things like flexible working, time off, adjustments, and internal or external support.
4. Make Practical Adjustments
Think desk fans, uniform fabrics, flexible hours, or rest spaces. Small changes can dramatically improve comfort and performance.
5. Celebrate and Share
Recognise Menopause Awareness Month in October. Invite a speaker or share personal stories. The more visible your support, the more staff will feel seen.
What You Gain
Supporting menopause in the workplace improves morale, increases productivity, reduces staff turnover, and strengthens your business’s reputation as an inclusive employer. It also aligns with expectations in the new Employment Rights Bill, which will hold businesses more accountable for employee wellbeing.
Start small. Pick one thing from the list and act on it this month. You might be surprised how quickly it opens up meaningful conversations in your team.
If your business needs help developing a menopause policy, training staff, or embedding a supportive culture, I can help. Let’s make Wrexham a place where no one is left behind at work because of menopause.
Break the taboo – normalise the conversation!
