Sam Rowlands has highlighted some important initiatives around Wrexham. One is the partnership announced between Wrexham University and Buck County Community College in Pennsylvania. The university has also completed the first year of a new nursing programme, which is starting to bear fruit. Meanwhile, the Maelor has announced it has added an important new procedure to the services it offers.

Wrexham Uni Collaboration

Sam has welcomed the announcement of Wrexham University (WU) launching a trailblazing international partnership with Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania, which will offer American students a seamless path to earning a globally recognised degree in as little as one year.

Sam commented, “The city continues to be a destination favourite with visitors, with a little help from Wrexham AFC. I would like to congratulate the university for helping to put Wrexham firmly on the higher education map.”

The collaboration between the University and the Community College will provide Bucks students with the opportunity to explore Welsh culture and graduate with an international degree in just three years, with an option to earn their Master of Business Administration postgraduate degree in the fourth year.

WU Nursing Programme

Students have completed the first course under the Health Education and Improvement Wales commissioning contract at WU. Some of them studied at the University’s Plas Coch site, while others studied at the St Asaph campus. Significantly for St Asaph, this cohort is the first group of students to study in the central area of North Wales for 30 years.

BCUHB’s executive director of nursing and midwifery, Angela Wood, told the students, “You are entering a profession that is evolving, expanding, and more vital than ever. You will be the ones who shape the future of care in North Wales. You will innovate, advocate, and lead.

Maelor Hospital

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has reported that the Maelor Hospital has become the first in Wales to offer a new procedure for treating carpal tunnel syndrome.

Sam said, “Patients will no longer need to be treated in a traditional operating theatre but in a minor procedure room, which lowers costs and speeds up recovery.”

Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon Mr Preetham Kodumuri has introduced an Ultrasound-Guided Carpal Tunnel Release system at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, which offers faster recovery, lower costs, and no visible scars – the first service of its kind in NHS Wales. The technique, performed under local anaesthetic in a minor procedure room, eliminates the need for a traditional operating theatre and significantly reduces the burden on surgical teams.

Mr Kodumuri said, “We are also seeing a number of benefits, such as the cost per case dropping from £2,100 to £760 as well as improving the patient experience – there is no incision, no stitches, no scar – patients return to normal activity faster, with fewer complications.”
