Wrexham Council’s development team have now handed over detailed plans to transform the area around Wrexham General Station into a vibrant new gateway for the city, featuring a brewery, taproom, museum and major office development.

Wrexham Gateway Regeneration

The council has lodged the proposals as part of its long-awaited Wrexham Gateway regeneration, a project designed to reshape one of the city’s key arrival points. The wider masterplan also includes the new Kop stand at the STōK Racecourse and a transport hub to improve connections for visitors and commuters.

Under the plans, the former Jewson builders’ merchant warehouse would become a new Wrexham Lager brewery. At the same time, the neighbouring Cambrian Sheds would become a taproom and museum celebrating the city’s proud brewing heritage. The council have also requested outline consent for a five-storey office block, a public plaza outside the station entrance and a pedestrian bridge linking the north of the site.

Attractive First Impression

The redevelopment aims to create a more welcoming, functional and attractive first impression for people arriving in the city by train. Proposed improvements include new bus stops, electric vehicle charging points, cycle storage and better pedestrian and cycling access from Mold Road. The former Girl Guides and Wrexham District Scouts buildings will undergo demolition to make way for the new facilities.

SHR Studio Architecture is leading the design team. Cushman & Wakefield are supporting them as cost consultants. Hoare Lea will look after mechanical and electrical design, and Civic Engineers on civil and structural work.

Up To 150 New Jobs

The Wrexham Gateway project is a partnership between Wrexham County Borough Council and Ambition North Wales. It aims to create a mixed-use district that combines commercial, cultural and transport improvements. Around 7,000 square metres of new office space are in the plans, providing opportunities for local businesses and new investors.

As part of the North Wales Growth Deal, the project should deliver up to £10 million in additional gross value added (GVA). It could create up to 150 new jobs in the region. The total investment value stands at £14.4 million, combining contributions from the Growth Deal and the public and private sectors.

Project managers at Wrexham Council regard the project as a cornerstone in connecting key parts of the city and supporting sustainable economic growth. Those leading the regeneration describe the Gateway as a chance to bring together transport, business and culture in a way that showcases Wrexham’s growing confidence and ambition.

Strategic And Scoping Phases

The project has already completed its strategic and scoping phases. It is now progressing through the outline business case and approval stages. Once these are signed off, procurement and full business case preparation will follow, paving the way for implementation and monitoring.

When complete, the Wrexham Gateway will serve as a landmark entrance to the city. It will link the station, Racecourse, and surrounding neighbourhoods with improved public spaces, active travel routes and new business opportunities.

Leading project delivery is a dedicated team at Wrexham County Borough Council. Alistair Aldridge, Wrexham Gateway Project Manager, oversees the coordination of the overall development. David Mathews, Land and Property Programme Manager, manages the site strategy and commercial planning.

Leanne Taylor, Regeneration Project Manager, is responsible for ensuring the scheme meets its regeneration and community goals. Together, they are steering one of North Wales’s most significant regeneration programmes. One that aims to redefine Wrexham’s arrival experience and strengthen the city’s position as a vital regional hub.
