The idea of moving to London with kids sounds a little out of depth for most people. The thought of uprooting your family from another area completely and navigating your way to a big city like London may seem impossible.

However, there’s a growing popularity in moving to big cities, whether it’s for a change of career or a fresh chapter for the family.

Moving to London with kids requires a lot of meticulous planning. There are plenty of things to think about, from finding family-friendly neighbourhoods to preparing your children emotionally for the big change.

Pre-Move Preparation

Before you hop, skip, and jump into a move as significant as this one, you’ll want to do some pre-move preparation. From conveyancing to booking the moving company, all the logistics need to be laid out in a timeline so everything is completed on time.

Research boroughs for the top-rated state schools available or secure private school places first. This is important to do as it will often dictate where your housing location will be. It’s also a good idea to research different areas, as you’ll want family-friendly places with good transport links and green spaces, which are rare in places like London.

Your kids should be a part of the process, especially if they’re old enough to realise what’s going on. Books are great to use or create a countdown to get them excited. It’s good to talk through any of their concerns or worries so that they feel confident about the move itself.

Have them pack their own boxes so that they feel in control and independent of their belongings.

The Move and Settling in

Setting up your children’s bedrooms is the best way to approach unpacking in your new home. By doing this, you’ll make them feel more secure and comfortable in their new environment. Seeing all of their furniture and familiar items in the space won’t make the new home feel so alien.

Keep up with the routines by ensuring bedtime stories are maintained, as well as breakfast routines are consistent. This all helps to provide stability during the transition.

Consider having a friend or family member watch your children if it’s possible. Perhaps they could stay with grandparents or family members before driving to collect them in order to bring them to the city.

Navigating London Living

Living in London is certainly an adjustment and one that’s good to be prepared for. Therefore, you’ll want to make sure you have everything you need to keep them safe and to navigate the city with ease. Understand the transport options available and be sure to locally explore the city by registering with local GPs and identifying local parks and playgrounds.

Factor in the higher costs for childcare, housing and living costs in general when living in the city as they fare dramatically compared to other parts of the country.

While it might prove challenging, living in London could be just the right move for your family.
