The Red Lion in Marford has officially reopened following a £177,000 refurbishment designed to modernise the pub while preserving its traditional character.

Interior And Exterior Refurb

Located on Marford Hill, the pub has undergone extensive work across both its interior and exterior spaces. Inside, the bar and lounge areas have received a full renovation with new fitted seating, updated décor and a new log-burning stove installed in the main bar area.

The lounge has also had an upgrade with interactive dart boards and four flat-screen televisions showing Sky Sports and TNT Sports, adding new entertainment facilities for customers. Externally, the building is now looking great after new signage and repainting work, which formed part of the wider redevelopment project.

The refurbishment has retained many of the venue’s original character features, including traditional wooden flooring, with the aim of further cementing its place as a community hub for local residents. The project was funded jointly by Admiral Taverns and licensee Sophie Crewe, who officially took over the pub in January after working there for eight years.

Original Features

Despite the upgrades, the renovation has retained many of the building’s original features, including the traditional wooden flooring. The aim, according to the operators, is to strengthen the Red Lion’s position as a community hub for Marford residents.

Speaking after the reopening, Sophie described the pub as “the heart of Marford” and said the refurbishment had allowed her long-term vision for the venue to become reality. She also thanked her staff and Admiral Taverns for supporting both the renovation project and her move from bar staff member to licensee.

To mark the reopening, the Red Lion held an all-day relaunch event on May 9 featuring local food trucks and live entertainment. The pub now plans to expand its programme of community activities with regular quiz, pool and darts nights. Fundraising events are also planned, including a weekly quiz night supporting Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support.

An Important Role Within The Community

Kelly Kerr, Business Development Manager at Admiral Taverns, said the reopening reflected the work put in by Sophie and the wider team during the refurbishment process. She also highlighted Sophie’s progression within the pub industry, describing her move from working behind the bar to taking over the business as an example of opportunities available within the sector. Admiral Taverns, which describes itself as ‘The UK’s leading community pub group’, said it expects the Red Lion to continue playing an important role within the local community for years to come.
