Wrexham has plenty of business and education news this summer. Coleg Cambria hosted careers events, while Moneypenny celebrated a milestone birthday. Here is a round-up of two local highlights.
Coleg Cambria Opens Doors to Careers
Hundreds of young people got a direct window into their future careers this term. Also, Coleg Cambria brought together some of the region’s biggest employers for the sessions. Held at the Yale and Deeside sites, they brought around 500 learners aged 16 to 18 face to face with organisations including Iceland Foods, North Wales Police and the RAF. The sessions gave insight into apprenticeships and employment routes.
The college also launched a new BA (Hons) Childhood and Adolescent Studies degree. Then, it starts this September at Northop, accredited by Wrexham University. Programme Leader Hannah Roberts said the course reflects growing demand for practitioners. She pointed to issues such as ADHD, autism and emotional well-being. Elsewhere, the college’s Students’ Union was named Further Education College Union of the Year at the NUS Cymru Awards. That came after the opening of a new Student Union Hub at Yale and the election of more than 300 learner representatives.
Staff and campuses were also celebrated at national hair and beauty industry awards. Hair technician Jackie Holland won an Unsung Hero Award there. Meanwhile, the academic year closed with the college’s annual Student Awards at Yale, sponsored by Airbus. The event honoured outstanding learners across Further Education, Higher Education, Apprenticeships and Adult Learning. The recognition reflects the real-world impact of both campuses, notably the pioneering Cosmetology Centre at Deeside, a facility quietly transforming lives across North Wales through oncology massage, inclusive beauty treatments and specialist haircare for people who might otherwise never access them.
A Decade of Ice Cream at Moneypenny
Moneypenny colleagues were treated to ice cream sundaes as part of a surprise celebration. This marked ten years since the company moved into its award-winning Wrexham headquarters. Opened in 2016, the building was designed around staff well-being. It features landscaped terraces, collaborative work areas and its own onsite pub, The Dog & Bone.
COO Wendy Swash said co-founders Ed Reeves and Rachel Clacher had wanted to create a workplace built around people. She added that it is the colleagues who bring it to life every day. Consequently, the milestone was a fitting tribute to a decade of growth. It also served as a reminder of how far the company has come since first opening its doors in Wrexham.
Together, the two stories show a county investing in both people and places. Coleg Cambria’s careers events give young learners a genuine head start, connecting them directly with employers who might otherwise feel out of reach. That kind of exposure, organisers say, often shapes career choices long before students leave education.
Moneypenny’s anniversary, meanwhile, offers a different kind of milestone, one built on staff retention and workplace culture rather than expansion for its own sake. Ten years in the same award-winning headquarters is a rare achievement for any growing company. Both stories, in their own way, point to Wrexham’s strengthening reputation as a place where education and business can genuinely thrive side by side.
