After running Bradford so close last time, Wrexham is preparing a fresh bid to become the UK City of Culture in 2029.

Back In The Running!

The competition, run every four years by the UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), has previously crowned Derry (2013), Hull (2017), Coventry (2021), and Bradford (2025),  and now, with the accumulated knowledge of the 2025 bid and a real sense of hope, we’re back in the running!

“Hwyl”

The 2029 bid is rooted in creativity, collaboration, and community – powered by the unique Welsh sense of “hwyl” (a spark of spirit and joy). They’re inviting schools, artists, businesses, performers, and residents alike to join the journey, telling Wrexham’s story in all its depth and colour.

The City of Culture team, including Amanda Davies, Morgan Thomas and local music star Evrah Rose, have already been out on the road for community drop-ins, visiting The Stiwt, Bangor-on-Dee, and Café Wyllfa in Chirk, among other places.

Wrexham Community & Culture Trust

Although the formal bidding process for 2029 is yet to open, the team has been busy behind the scenes. They have established the new “Wrexham Community & Culture Trust” and put everything in place so the bid can be ready to go as soon as it does.

Securing the title would bring significant economic and social benefits to Wrexham. It would also attract inward investment, creating jobs, increasing access to cultural activity and providing an opportunity to tell Wrexham’s story on a national scale.
