Two interesting examples from the local community come from author Samantha Maxwell and the Friendly Society, which is holding coffee mornings in Wrexham.
Samantha Maxwell
Samantha Maxwell is the local Wrexham author of CP Isn’t Me, Disabling Ableism, and SILENCED. Her books aim to combat ableism by sharing the lived experiences of people with disabilities, challenging stereotypes, and fostering greater understanding.

Many ask if her books are available as audiobooks. She would love for them to be, as accessibility is vital in an equal society. It’s not a luxury but a right. Audiobooks make stories accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired, those with learning difficulties, and anyone who prefers to listen. To make her first book, CP Isn’t Me, available as an audiobook, she needs to raise approximately £2,000 for professional narration, editing, and production costs. She wants to practice what she preaches by ensuring her work reaches as many people as possible.

The Friendly Society
The Friendly Society, North Wales & Chester Oddfellows is inviting local people to a series of special events as part of its annual Friendship Month celebrations this September. The local not-for-profit group comprises around 500 members, mostly older adults. It is appealing to people to push past any uncertainty or self-doubt and to say ‘yes’ to giving their friendly group a try. They are kicking off their festivities with friendship coffee mornings across their district in Llandudno, Saltney, Wrexham and Anglesey.

North Wales & Chester Oddfellows invites local people to try its friendly coffee mornings. Caroline Davey, Social Organiser for North Wales & Chester Oddfellows, promises a warm welcome. She said, “Trying new activities inevitably puts us in situations where we feel uncomfortable or a little out of place. However, that’s all part of the experience. People who try us always leave saying they wish they hadn’t worried so much, and they’re pleased they came along.
Email [email protected] to register an interest in attending one of North Wales & Chester Oddfellows’ Friendship Month events, or to find out more about the group and its activities. You can also call Denise on 01244 675 757 or request a local info pack at friendshipmonth.com.
I am the Social Organiser for the North Wales & Chester Oddfellows and throughout September we’ve been celebrating Friendship Month at the Oddfellows, our annual campaign to shine a light on all the wonderful benefits of friendship. This year we’ve been encouraging people to say ‘yes’ to trying new things and making new friends locally and have hosted several taster events where people have got together and a had a wonderful time.
We’d love the opportunity to say thank you to all those who came along and joined in the fun and let people know what we’ve got planned in the near future.
A Note From Caroline Davey
Making new friends and trying something different can feel harder as we get older. That’s why I’d like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who attended our group events during Friendship Month this September. Local social groups, such as North Wales & Chester Oddfellows, are here to offer a friendly space where you can meet others, share company, and look forward to activities.
If you weren’t able to join us this time, please don’t worry – there are many more opportunities ahead. In the coming weeks we’ve got a gentle stroll in Acton Park, Wrexham on Friday 24th October meeting in the Car park of the Cunliffe Arms pub at 11.30am, a talk about the building of The Manchester Ship Canal on Saturday 1st November at Douglas Place, Saltney at 2.30pm and a coach trip to Barton Grange Garden Centre on Monday 24th November at 10.30am, as well as other regular get-togethers in Saltney, Llandudno, Wrexham and Anglesey.
If you’d like to come along, you’ll be made very welcome. You can get in touch with me on 01244 675757 or by email at [email protected], and I’ll be happy to send you a diary of local events. You can also see what’s coming up at www.oddfellows.co.uk/events.
We’d be delighted to meet you.
