Done Together CIC is inviting people across Wrexham to help shape a new programme of self-defence and street awareness training for the local community.
Traditional Chinese Martial Arts
We are teaming up with the North Wales Police Self Defence Section, which teaches traditional Chinese martial arts, including Kung Fu, to develop practical, accessible sessions for members of the public. Using the Silent Hands Kung Fu system, the aim is to help people feel safer, more confident and better prepared when out and about, at work, travelling, socialising or supporting others.
But before we launch anything, we want to hear from you.
We are asking mums, dads, carers, young people aged 14+, older people, NHS workers, teachers, lone workers, community volunteers and anyone who simply wants to feel more confident in their personal safety to complete a short survey. Your answers will help us understand what people actually want to learn, where sessions should take place, what times would work best and what barriers might stop people from attending.
Recognising Unsafe Situations
The course could include:
- How to feel more confident when out and about
- How to be more aware of your surroundings
- How to recognise unsafe situations or warning signs
- How to use your voice confidently
- What to do if someone grabs or threatens you
- Basic physical self-defence techniques
- How to get away safely from a situation
- Safety when travelling, using taxis, buses or walking alone
- How to report an incident or concern
However, this is only the starting point. Through the survey, you can tell us what you would like to learn and what would help you feel more confident, safer and more prepared.
As a women-led CIC, Done Together knows that personal safety means different things to different people. For some, it may be about walking home in the dark. For others, it may be about lone working, travelling to appointments, supporting vulnerable people, knowing how to use your voice, or helping young people build confidence as they move through secondary school and beyond.
Basic Skills
We do not believe self-defence should only be aimed at one group of people. Everyone deserves to have some basic skills to look after themselves, spot danger early and get away safely if a situation becomes unsafe. We would especially love to see young people and their trusted adults learning together, because confidence and safety are things we can build as families and communities, not just as individuals.
The sessions will be led by Chris Corcoran, a retired Detective Chief Superintendent who spent 30 years with North Wales Police. Chris has more than 40 years’ experience teaching practical, confidence-building self-defence to women, children, disabled people, police officers and community groups. He has written books on policing and community safety, has been recognised nationally for his contribution to community wellbeing, and cares deeply about Wrexham.
There is also a lovely connection to Done Together’s own journey. Chris’s son, Mike, has worked closely with Done Together CIC and has been a mentor to Natalie, our lead Director, from the early days of the organisation. It feels very fitting that another member of the family is now helping us take the next step in supporting local communities.
Pilot Course
We hope to start with a four-week pilot course in Wrexham from September. The pilot will be shaped directly by the responses we receive through the survey. Done Together CIC hopes to self-fund the pilot, with a small, affordable fee for attendees, which will be refunded at the end of the course. If the pilot is successful, we will then seek further funding to bring the sessions into more communities.
So now we need your help.
Please complete our short survey and tell us what would make self-defence and street awareness training useful, welcoming and accessible for you, your family, your workplace or your community.
Your voice will help us build something practical, confidence-boosting and genuinely shaped by Wrexham.
