Network North Wales has reached its first six months with new train and bus services, station improvements, and developments planned.

Ken Skates

The long-term project aims to deliver an integrated, high-frequency public transport network.
It will enhance connectivity within North Wales and link the region to the North West of England.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, marked the milestone by travelling on a newly wrapped train. The journey took place on the renamed Wrexham–Liverpool line. The livery, designed following passenger consultation, highlights key locations along the route. Station upgrades have included improved shelters and the unveiling of the refurbished Flint station by Network Rail.

Bus services have also expanded, with the introduction of the T51 route between Rhyl and Wrexham.
A new double-deck fleet in the new year will support the hourly service.

Wrexham-Liverpool Route

Rail passengers will benefit from timetable changes coming into effect on 14 December. The Chester–Wrexham line will now run two trains per hour. The Wrexham–Liverpool route gains additional services, including an early morning train from Bidston to Wrexham General. A later evening departure will also operate from Wrexham Central to Bidston.

Other improvements include extra stops for the Cardiff–Holyhead service and retained evening trains on the Cambrian Line. These evening services run between Pwllheli and Machynlleth.

£800 Million Investment

Ken Skates highlighted the significance of the changes, noting: “Railway connections are vital in driving prosperity. “These changes will make a real difference to customers, who will benefit from more services across Wales and the Borders. “This has been made possible by our £800m investment in brand-new trains.” He added that Pay as You Go will begin rolling out in the north east next year. This will make travel more convenient for passengers.

Local officials have welcomed the enhancements. Councillor David A Bithell described the additional Chester–Wrexham services as “excellent news”. He stressed the benefits for residents, commuters, and the city’s development.

The first six months have delivered more frequent, flexible, and reliable services with visible infrastructure improvements. Further enhancements are planned as the initiative continues to transform public transport across North Wales. It is also strengthening links with neighbouring regions.
