Wrexham Military Veterans FC has rapidly established itself as a thriving community for former service personnel since its formation by Neil Jones in partnership with the Armed Forces Covenant and Wrexham AFC.

Armed Forces Community Affiliation

Neil created the club to bring veterans from across the Wrexham area together through football, offering a way to stay active, reconnect with others who have served, and build mutual support through sport.

Planning for the initiative began in April 2025. With the backing of Wrexham AFC through its Armed Forces Community Affiliation, the project quickly gathered momentum. What started as an idea to unite local veterans has since evolved into a sizeable squad of more than 48 members, representing the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force.

The team has already taken part in a series of charity matches, facing Croeshowell FC, Brymbo FC, Llandudno Community FC and North Wales Fire and Rescue. They have also planned further fixtures, continuing the club’s commitment to playing for good causes and strengthening links across the region.

February will bring a significant moment when a team from HMS Dragon – the first ship affiliated with Wrexham since the Second World War – travels to the city for a match. Looking ahead to 2026, plans are also in place for fixtures against Veterans Hub teams linked with Premier League and Championship clubs, including Sunderland, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Wrexham Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Beverly Parry Jones, recognised the club’s progress recently during a visit. She attended the kit reveal at Sofa Outlet on Wrexham Industrial Estate, the team’s new sponsor, and said: “It’s great to see such a new team develop so quickly with many of our local veterans now benefiting from joining the club.”

Founder Neil Jones also expressed his appreciation for the support the club has received. “I’d like to thank Sofa Outlet for showing their support for our venture and sponsoring our first official kit,” he said. He encouraged any interested veterans to come along to training sessions on the astro pitch at Wrexham University. “We’re there every Thursday, 6-7pm – a warm welcome to all.”

With a full calendar of upcoming fixtures, Wrexham Military Veterans FC is becoming a valuable network for veterans across the area – combining football, camaraderie and community spirit in equal measure.
