A Guide To Climate Change In Wales – The recent impact of natural disasters in places such as Valencia and Florida, localised flooding in England and Wales, coastal erosion in many places and flood prevention measures in coastal towns such as Llandudno and Aberaeron have raised public awareness even further about the impact of climate change.

Cynefin, Wales And The World

In particular, it has signalled the desire of an increasing number of people for information regarding the implications of what they are experiencing within our own country of Wales.

In the expertly researched, all-embracing and thought-provoking Cynefin, Wales And The World, the editor Myrddin ap Dafydd has co-ordinated the research of a wide range of acknowledged experts to unravel, interpret and explain what can be observed and experienced within our “cynefin” (habitat) of Cymru (Wales). The crucial sections of the text include extensively researched sections about the exploration of geology and tectonic processes, weather and climate and the changing economy.

Readers will love the book layout, with its considered arrangement of pictures, diagrams, and graphs. An outstanding example is the section on glaciation, which stimulates interest, understanding and awareness of local impact.

How to Protect Wales’s Environment

In addition, the section on “How to Protect Wales’s Environmentparticularly captivated me. It focuses on the three issues of pollution conservation and climate change – critical areas in protecting Wales’s environment.

People who have been residents in an area or “local cynfin“, such as a village or town, usually have an in-depth insight or “handed down knowledge” regarding crucial issues such as flood plains, underground mine works, landfill or erosion. I am sure that many readers in Wrexham will have realised the dangers of flooding or subsidence when the authorities grant planning permission for new housing on a susceptible site.

The planning permission is often “contra-suggestible” to local knowledge (LK) or what your “Taid told you” about that piece of land, resulting in incomers who lack this LK tending to buy the suspect houses.

The book highlights how modern technology, in terms of media transmissions and smartphones, has enabled individuals to gain greater awareness not only of their local cynefin but also of the national cynefin and global cynefin.

Educational Adventure

Cirriculum-linked school trips have advanced the awareness of those families involved. For example, my eldest granddaughter recently went on a school trip to Iceland. This 7-day “educational adventure” brought her studies in geography and science outside of her own cynefin alive and hopefully stimulated awareness of the bigger picture.

The book focuses primarily on raising the knowledge and skills of children and young people. However, I am certain many adults and parents, particularly those whose studies in geography, geology, and social history were limited, will benefit from using this inspirational book as a research text, which is far easier to read and cross-reference than Google.

This work deserves a key place in all schools, colleges, and homes. It will promote discovery and insight for readers of all ages regarding “caring” for their local and national natural history, environment and culture. The small publishing company Carreg Gwalch deserves praise for the text’s high quality and overall presentation.

Ardderchog (Excellent).
