Groundwork North Wales has launched the Super Surplus project with Wrexham Food Partnership to bring fresh, local produce to the community.
Promoting Sustainability
In a bid to tackle food insecurity and promote sustainability, the initiative aims to increase access to fresh, locally grown food for those in need. Local growers, including allotment holders and vegetable gardeners, will connect with the community by creating an easy and effective way to donate surplus produce.
The project seeks to ensure that fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs – particularly those with seasonal glut periods like courgettes, apples, and berries – are utilised effectively. Rather than letting surplus food go to waste, the partnership will transform these donations into nutritious, preserved products such as soups, smoothies, and sauces. These items will be vacuum-packed, frozen, or otherwise preserved to retain their nutritional value and prolong their usability.
Community-Focused Efforts
This fresh food initiative will support multiple community-focused efforts, including:
Community Fridge Access: Providing nutritious food options to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
Support for Vulnerable Groups: Distributing prepared meals through projects such as a lunch club for isolated older adults and life skills programs for young parents.
Sustainable Fundraising: Selling preserved food items at low cost during special events hosted by the community café.
Peak Harvest Times
The project will create additional sources of food beyond peak harvest times. It achieves this by maintaining relationships with local businesses and community-growing initiatives. This collaborative approach ensures a steady supply of fresh and preserved produce, even in cases of seasonal shortages or poor weather conditions.
