International Nurses Day

Profound Difference

Nightingale House recognised the profound difference its nurses make on International Nurses Day, not only to patients and their families, but also to the future of hospice care. Their passion, skill and dedication are central to the care the hospice provide.

Nursing and medical staff at the hospice are at the heart of services at Nightingale House, supporting patients and their families to live their fullest lives, despite having a progressive or life-limiting illness. Whether delivering expert clinical care on their Inpatient Unit, managing complex symptoms in the Wellbeing Centre, or offering emotional support during times of uncertainty, the nursing team play a vital role in helping people feel safe, comfortable and valued.

Laura Singleton, Ward Manager at Nightingale House Hospice, said, “Being a hospice nurse is a privilege. We’re here to offer not just clinical care but a sense of peace and dignity. It’s about helping people feel supported and empowered, even in the most difficult circumstances.”

Expert Multidisciplinary Team

At Nightingale House, nurses work closely with an expert multidisciplinary team, including GPs, doctors, healthcare assistants, pharmacists, complementary therapists, and social workers in the family support team and the spiritual care team. Together, they ensure that every aspect of a patient’s well-being is considered, making every moment matter.

Laura Drummond, Advanced Nurse Practitioner at the Wrexham-based hospice, said, “Our role is to advocate for the needs and wishes of our patients and their families, while managing complex symptoms and care plans. Hospice nursing is about compassion, teamwork and making a difference every single day.”

Nursing at Nightingale House goes far beyond bedside care. In the Well-being Centre, nurses play a key role in helping patients maintain their independence and improve their quality of life through tailored programmes and therapies.

Carolyn James, Wellbeing Lead at Nightingale House, said, “Nurses are a crucial part of the wider care we offer at Nightingale House. Our holistic approach helps patients maintain independence and quality of life, and their emotional support is just as important as their clinical expertise.” At Nightingale House Hospice, the focus is on helping patients live well for as long as possible, despite a progressive or life-limiting illness. The nursing team embodies this philosophy daily, supporting patients and their loved ones with dignity, compassion and hope as they navigate their journey

Welsh Government Grant

Nightingale House Hospice have received a grant of £474,950 from the Welsh Government as part of a vital £5.5 million cash injection for the hospice sector across Wales. This much-needed support will help alleviate some of the significant financial pressures the hospice has faced over the past 12 months.

An Independent Charity

As one of 12 commissioned hospices in Wales, Nightingale House remains an independent charity. It relies on the community and its supporters, who fund approximately 80% of its annual running costs. The hospice provides exceptional palliative and end-of-life care. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support patients and their families during the most challenging times.

Lauren Emberton, Chief Executive of Nightingale House Hospice, said, “We are incredibly thankful to the Welsh Government. They have recognised the essential role that hospices play in our healthcare system. This grant has significantly helped us address the challenges we have faced at Nightingale House over the past year. We work tirelessly to generate income through our shops, café, donations, grants, and fundraising events. However, the reality is that we are unable to keep pace with the soaring cost of living and the rising salary costs linked to the NHS Agenda for Change.

“We urgently need a more sustainable and fair funding model. This not only continues delivering the outstanding care our community expects and deserves, but also expands and evolves our services for those who need them most in the future. We are in ongoing discussions with the Welsh Government to secure a new, fairer funding framework for hospices across Wales.”

Extraordinary Challenges

Over the past year, hospices have faced extraordinary challenges with rapidly increasing costs. Health Secretary Jeremy Miles has recognised these pressures. He acknowledged the vital role that hospices play in supporting families across Wales. His support highlights the value of hospice care and the need for long-term solutions to safeguard these essential services.

The hospice extends its heartfelt thanks to its dedicated staff, volunteers, and loyal supporters. Their commitment enables Nightingale House to continue its mission in the face of ongoing financial challenges.

Lauren Emberton added, “Our team of staff and volunteers go above and beyond every day. They make sure our patients and their loved ones receive the care and support they need. Without them and the unwavering generosity of our community, we simply could not continue. This grant is an important step. We remain hopeful that together we can secure the future of hospice care for generations to come.”
