The Turf’s Wayne looks back on a rollercoaster September for Wrexham AFC – and ahead to a big October at the Cae Ras.

Well, September gave Wrexham fans plenty to smile about! As a supporter, you’ve probably experienced just about every emotion going this month. Now, with a big October ahead at the Cae Ras, there’s plenty more to come.

Wrexham’s September in Review

A Rollercoaster Month for Wrexham

There have been big performances, hard-earned points and a few moments of frustration. Most importantly, though, some results have reminded us how far this football club has come. For me, the win at Millwall was a particular highlight.

To go to The Den and come away with a 3–0 victory was a fantastic result. Moreover, there was plenty to enjoy about the performance. Kieffer Moore got on the scoresheet, and so did new recruit Jacques Ekomié. It was great to see one of our newest faces score so early in his Wrexham career. After all, there’s nothing quite like that first goal to settle a new player in. I’m sure we’ll see plenty more of Jacques as the season progresses.

Hard-Earned Points Against Swansea and Burnley

The trip to Swansea was a completely different sort of game. A goalless draw doesn’t necessarily grab the headlines the way a big away win does. However, derby games often come down to staying in the game, competing and coming away with something.

Besides, a point on the road is never something to turn your nose up at. Then we had Burnley at the Racecourse, fresh out of the Premier League. It was another difficult opponent and another competitive game, but also another big point on the board.

Those are the sorts of games that remind us what this Championship is all about. There are some genuinely big clubs in this division, with plenty of history. As a result, every week brings another challenge.

Bouncing Back Against Southampton

Of course, there was one result against West Ham that we’ll politely brush under the carpet. Sometimes in football, the less said, the better! But then came Southampton, and now that’s more like it.

A 2–1 victory at the Cae Ras was exactly the sort of response we wanted to see. After a difficult afternoon, the lads showed character and bounced back. That result got everyone at the Racecourse smiling again.

There’s something special about a big game at the Racecourse. That’s particularly true when the atmosphere gets going. Southampton certainly provided one of those occasions this month.

What Comes Next

Proving We Belong in the Championship

So far this season, we’re learning very quickly that this level is unforgiving. At the same time, we’re also showing that we belong here. For me, that’s one of the most encouraging things so far, and we shouldn’t overlook it.

It wasn’t that long ago that Wrexham were playing in the National League. Now we’re welcoming established Championship clubs to the Cae Ras and visiting some of the country’s biggest grounds. That’s quite a journey.

I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing new faces settle in, and Ekomié’s goal at Millwall is a great example. When a new player arrives, everyone wants to see what they can bring, but patience matters. Instead of piling on pressure, give them time and let those little moments build, because a first goal certainly helps!

Looking Ahead to October

Now we’re heading into October, and there’s plenty more to look forward to. I’m particularly looking forward to welcoming West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End to the Racecourse. When you look at the Championship calendar, fixtures like these really underline the size of the challenge.

There are some big away trips too, including Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United. But for me, October is about continuing to build. We’ve already seen what this team can do when everything clicks.

We’ve also seen the character required to respond when things don’t go our way. On top of that, new players are beginning to make their mark. That’s what you want from a season: something to look forward to every time you walk through the gates.

That’s Football

Let’s be honest, there are going to be a few more twists and turns along the way. That’s football. One week you’re celebrating three points at Millwall.

The next, you’re trying very hard to forget a certain result in London. Then, suddenly, you’re back at STōK Cae Ras celebrating a big win over Southampton. You wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, as we head into October, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next. Hopefully, that means more big games, more big atmospheres and more new faces making their mark. Most of all, I hope for a few more reasons to raise a glass together at The Turf.
