From award-winning engineering to university medicine offers, Coleg Cambria students are celebrating a string of achievements this term, alongside a thriving table tennis partnership across North Wales.
An Award-Winning Engineer Heads to Sheffield
Krish Lavan, 18, from Wrexham, has accepted an offer to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Sheffield. While studying at Cambria’s Yale Sixth Form, Krish won the Yale Sixth Student of the Year Award. Alongside fellow learner Dylan Blackwell, he also won a national engineering competition at the NEC Birmingham. Their robot helps support sustainable farming.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to my subject teachers for their constant academic support,” Krish said. Gareth Jones, Head of Yale Sixth, praised his determination. “He has embraced every opportunity available to him,” Gareth said, “and been a fantastic role model for his peers.”
Two Future Doctors Secure Their Places
Meanwhile, two more Cambria students are heading to medical school. Lili González-Lewis, inspired by the compassionate care her family received, will study Medicine at Cardiff University. “My decision to study Medicine was sparked by the compassionate, patient-centred care I saw being provided to my family members,” she said.
Martyna Kaczmarek, once unsure whether medicine was within reach, will now study at the University of Manchester. “My confidence grew so much during my time there,” she said, crediting the college’s Seren Medic Programme. Both students praised the guidance of tutors including Nora Richardson and Dr Olwen Kiff throughout their applications.
A Growing Table Tennis Partnership
Elsewhere, a partnership between Coleg Cambria, Table Tennis Wales and Active Wrexham continues to grow. It has now engaged more than 1,500 people since 2023. Aaron Beech, North Wales Regional Development Officer for Table Tennis Wales, said the impact has been clear. “We’ve seen first-hand the positive impact table tennis can have on young people,” he said.
Highlights this term included a visit to Bwlchgwyn Primary School. Over 100 pupils took part in coordination and movement sessions there. Meanwhile, Cambria’s own Level 2 and Level 3 Sport learners gained hands-on coaching experience too. They supported a Primary School Table Tennis Festival and a championship event.
Sally Jones, Curriculum Director at Coleg Cambria, said the partnership benefits everyone involved. “Our students have gained invaluable leadership and coaching experience,” she said. “Hundreds of young people have also been introduced to a sport that promotes physical activity, confidence, teamwork and wellbeing.”
