A New Chapter in a Proud Journey

Wrexham AFC Women have come a long way since their early days as NEWI Wrexham Ladies. Formed in 2003, the team joined the brand-new North Wales Women’s Football League and played on a pitch next to the Racecourse Ground. By 2009, they were helping to launch the Welsh Premier Women’s League and competing as Wrexham Ladies FC.

A few strong seasons followed – including a divisional title in 2011-12 – before player numbers dipped and the side withdrew from the league in 2016. Two years later, Wrexham AFC Women were reborn, starting in the lower reaches of the North Wales set-up and winning their first cup within months. They climbed the ladder quickly, despite the disruption caused by the pandemic, which wiped out their 2020-21 campaign.

The arrival of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as club owners in late 2020 brought new energy, and the FAW’s league restructure created a clear route back to the top. Wrexham joined the new Adran North in 2021 and finished as runners-up in their first season after losing the final game of the season against league winners Llandudno Ladies FC! A year later, they went one better, lifting the trophy unbeaten and edging Briton Ferry Llansawel, 1-0, in a tense play-off to secure promotion to the Adran Premier.

In June 2023, 10 players signed semi-professional deals – a first for the club and for the league. Since then, Wrexham have stayed near the summit, reached two FAW Women’s Cup finals and made their European ambitions clear by earning a UEFA licence. They’ve also tested themselves abroad, playing in the USA and becoming the first women’s team from outside Asia to appear at the HKFC Soccer Sevens.

The most recent campaign has begun in style. Wrexham opened the 2025-26 season with back-to-back wins against Briton Ferry Ladies (5-2) and Barry TU Women (3-2). This early momentum has given supporters plenty to smile about as the team look to push higher in the table.

The ladies now have a permanent home. After spells at Brymbo and Penycae, they moved into The Rock in Rhosymedre and, in August this year, Wrexham bought the ground outright. Cefn Druids will continue to share the facilities, but the stadium is now firmly linked to the women’s section.

A fresh voice is guiding them as well. Steve Dale stepped down in May after four seasons, handing the reins to Jenny Sugarman. Her experience with West Bromwich Albion Women and Leicester City’s academy promises a bright future.

Sugarman is keen to progress and said, “I like a project and to build a community and team culture. I want to build a team that the supporters can get behind and come to watch. I have a people-first culture. It’s essential that we create an environment where players and staff can thrive and reach their full potential. To do that, we have to have a healthy balance between challenge and support.”
