The Best Way to Protect Your Furniture During a Renovation

Needless to say, the idea of getting to do a home renovation, be it a kitchen renovation, bathroom, living room, wherever, it’s all absolutely fabulous. The idea of getting to do something major like that is absolutely wonderful. But of course, most renovations obviously mean that your whole house, well, at least a couple of rooms, is going to be a dusty construction zone. Yeah, emphasis on dust there, because there’s going to be a lot of it.

A lot of people either assume their furniture (and decor) will be fine during the renovation, but dust can really ruin some it it, especially textiles like couches. Okay, well, if that’s the case, how can you even protect your stuff, especially if it’s one of those massive renovations?

Just Get Things Out of the Way ASAP

No, really, it’s that simple, but usually, just tucking something into a corner in the same room as the renovation seems to be the norm (and it shouldn’t be). But yeah, shoving it into the corner is the biggest trap, and yeah, people do it, and obviously, they regret it. Well, it’s not just the damage, but it’s quite literally in the way during renovations, so then it’ll need to get moved again, and that’s honestly a headache of its own, too. But yeah, if you can move furniture out of the room entirely, do it.

The less stuff around, the fewer chances something gets bumped, scraped, or mysteriously dented. So, it might depend on the renovation itself and the size of your house, but it could really help to look into self storage if you don’t have a basement, or an attic, or even just another room where some of your furniture can go for the time being. But of course, if you’re doing a major renovation, then yeah, you’ll absolutely need to look into a storage unit.

Wrap Everything

Now, of course, you already know that dust is disrespectful. It doesn’t matter how confident you are about something being “out of the way,” it’s still going to find it. Sure, dust is smelly and gross, but this can absolutely ruin certain pieces too; again, couches are the perfect example. So wrapping things properly is a must. It can’t be stressed enough, it needs to be with plastic material and not the old bedsheet you found at the back of the wardrobe.

But yeah, actual protective covers that don’t shift every time someone breathes near them. While yes, dust can really affect anything with textiles, just for safety, you should still wrap up basically anything and everything you absolutely can, because you just never know how much damage construction dust can cause to your furniture. But wrapping now means less (or hopefully no) regrets later.

Your Floors will Take the Biggest Hit

Alright, this part doesn’t have too much to do with furniture, well, your furniture lies on your floor, so there’s still that relation there. But yeah, you absolutely need to protect your floors because they’re the ones taking the biggest hit during all of these renovations.  Besides, damaged floors could mean areas where your furniture won’t be able to go on anymore.

You’ll absolutely need to put down some thick covers or protective mats, as this saves you from scratches, stains, and random paint splatters that absolutely were not in the plan.
