When you’ve got a sick pet on your hands, the idea of getting ready for bed and getting a good night’s sleep can be scary. You want to be awake and ready to act if your pet needs you, whether they’ve vomited, have accidentally toileted inside the house, or seem to be in pain.
You want to know if they need help, and you want to be able to get them the care they need – even if it’s 3 in the morning! And that adds another layer of worry to the equation, which makes shutting your eyes and relaxing all the more difficult!
If you’ve ever been in a situation like this before, or you’re facing a few sleepless nights with an ill dog, cat, rabbit, or bird, here are 3 tips that could help.
Sleep Near Your Pet
You want your pet to be nearby when they’re feeling ill, even if you don’t usually let them on the bed with you.
But make an exception, just this once. It will comfort your pet when they’re not well, and it’ll also make checking in on your pet’s health much easier. After all, you won’t even have to get out of bed.
Of course, it may not be possible to get your pet to your sleeping area. If this is the case, go to theirs!
Schedule Regular Checks
You need to get some sleep – we already know that. If you’re able to sleep, you’re likely to make much more rational (and less emotional!) decisions about your pet’s care!
But if you’re the only person around to keep an eye on your pet, you’re going to have to schedule regular checks throughout the night.

This usually means setting some alarms to wake you up twice throughout the night to go and check how your pet is doing. If it would make you feel better, you can also schedule these wake-up calls to occur every couple of hours.
If you do have someone else to help you keep an eye, take it in turns to stay up with your pet. One person sleeps the first half, the other person sleeps the second half.
Be Ready for an Emergency Vet Visit
You can get ready by making sure you know where the nearest emergency vet is, and you can double-check the services and prices by heading online to their website, like here at Veteris.co.uk.
Then, see how long it’s likely to take to get there, if you have reliable transport for a trip at sudden notice, or if it’d be safer and more accessible to contact the emergency vet now.
At the very least, they can give you advice on making sure your pet feels comfortable enough through the night, and then you can get to see your regular vet first thing in the morning.
When your pet’s sick, you’re going to be sick with worry! Survive the night safe and sane using the tips above.
