Simple Ways to Give Your Home a More Stylish Feel

When your home starts to feel a bit… boring, you’ll probably think about the big things you want to change first, like getting new furniture, giving the place a complete redecoration, or maybe even changing the layout and starting again. But the fact is that more often than not, smaller changes can make a big difference, and it’ll cost less, be less disruptive, and look amazing. With that in mind, keep reading to find out some of the simple ways to give your home a more stylish feel.

Rethink Your Lighting First

Lighting is a great thing to focus on because it’s actually one of the quickest ways to change a room, from how it looks to how it feels, and it tends to get forgotten about or left to last on the to do list, and that’s where mistakes often happen.

But surely one overhead light is fine, isn’t it? It does the job of lighting the room, and that’s all you really need, isn’t it? Well, it does do the job, but it doesn’t do it as well as other options, and that one overhead light can actually make everything feel a bit flat, especially in the evenings.

If you add softer lighting at different levels, it tends to work much better – that means you might use a table lamp, a floor lamp, or perhaps some wall fittings, and once you’ve got that in place instead of the single light, it’ll feel more relaxing and comfortable (and more stylish).

Pay Attention To Colour

You really don’t need a full repaint to make a big difference – sometimes it’s just about introducing a new colour, and doing it in interesting ways. By that, we mean adding cushions, throws, perhaps pieces of artwork, rather than painting the walls something big and bold. The best part is, you’re not committing to anything permanent, and you can change things, mix and match, or remove it all completely depending on the look you’re going for.

The key is to ensure that the walls and floor (and ideally the larger pieces of furniture as well) are kept neutral because that way, you’ll be able to add any colour you like (although it’s probably best to avoid adding too much at once) because it’s not going to clash with your existing colour scheme.

Bring In The Right Materials

Flat, uniform finishes aren’t going to do a lot to make your room look stylish, unique, or comfortable – in fact, the opposite tends to be true, and the whole place will feel clinical and cold. However, if you mix in various materials, you can bring a bit of life to the place and help to create some contrast and interest, even if in general everything still stays looking quite simple.

Things like wood, metal, fabric, and glass all give a different kind of feel to a place, and they’ll all interact differently with the light you’ve got, and that can really add some character to a room, which can be enough to break things up and make things feel more stylish.

Choose Statement Pieces Carefully

A well-placed statement piece can anchor the room, which is what you’ll want, but it does work best when it’s used carefully and sparingly because if you’ve got too many focal points, the space is just going to feel cluttered, which is bad for your mental health, not to mention not ideal for your interior decor.

Something like art deco furniture can be a good choice because it adds a nice and distinctive touch but isn’t going to completely take over and be the only thing anyone looks at (especially if the rest of the room is quite simple).

Keep Surfaces Clear

Speaking of clutter, it definitely has a way of sneaking up on you, and before you know it, you’ve got things on every available surface – but since it happens slowly before you notice it, you might not realise it’s happened until you look around one day and wonder why there’s so much stuff everywhere.

That’s why it’s wise to take a bit of time to clear surfaces regularly, just to ensure it doesn’t get too bad. If you only keep what you actually want there, it’s going to make a massive difference. As for the rest, you can either throw it away, store it somewhere, or perhaps donate or sell it, depending on what it is.

Adjust The Layout Slightly

Sometimes a room doesn’t feel quite right because of how things are arranged in it, and if you try moving furniture around, it might be just the thing to open up the space and make it feel a lot more balanced, which in turn makes things a lot more comfortable.

It’s definitely worth experimenting with this before you buy anything new – you might find the room works really well by just moving around what you’ve already got, and that would save you a lot of money, and you won’t have to work out how to dispose of your current items either, which isn’t always easy.

Let Personal Style Come Through

A stylish home doesn’t have to follow a set formula – in fact, it’s better if it doesn’t because you’re not going to have a very interesting home if you do, and it’s definitely not going to be unique or feel like it belongs to you. The best spaces tend to reflect the person who lives there, so that’s the thing to focus on.

That might mean mixing different styles, for example, or keeping things a bit uneven, or maybe even holding onto pieces that don’t quite fit but that you love anyway.

Give It Time To Come Together

Trying to fix everything all at once is never a good idea, and it’s really just going to become frustrating and overwhelming. In the end, you might make some quick decisions just to get it done, but those are the choices that don’t always work so well, and that you’ll come to regret.

Making a few changes here and there and then making sure they work before moving on to something else means that the end result feels more comfortable and natural, and it’s not going to feel forced, which isn’t usually the look and feel anyone actually wants.
