The internet goes crazy for Wrexham AFC. Things seem to be going utterly bonkers for Wrexham AFC just lately: not only are they riding high in League One, close behind leaders Birmingham City and second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, but they’ve also been a magnet for some seemingly far-fetched rumours to do with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Gareth and Cristiano
It all started a few months ago when stories appeared of co-owner Rob McElhenney making overtures to now-retired Gareth Bale back in June.
McElhenney told the BBC, “Gareth Bale is still technically available! I made the plea last year and will tell Gareth that the offer’s still on the table. We’ll let you off for golf whenever you need to get off. As long as you come to training once or twice a week, we can figure out how to get you 10 minutes on the pitch.”
With no further reports of the deal progressing, we can conclude that Bale has happily retired with no intention of lacing up his boots again – even if it is for a Welsh club on the crest of a wave.
The Cristiano Ronaldo connection first came to light in mid-October when Prime Casino ran a story quoting ex-Chelsea defender. He said, “Cristiano Ronaldo to Wrexham? Anything is possible in modern football. It wouldn’t surprise me because money talks, and we’ve seen that nothing is impossible these days. Now everything is about social media and having millions of followers, and both Wrexham and Ronaldo have huge profiles, so why not?”
Huge Clickbait
As an interesting aside, Wrexham’s highest-paid player is George Evans, whose weekly wage is apparently in the region of £7,000 per week. Cristiano earns £3.4million a week at Al-Nassr!
No sooner did that story come out than another Cristiano and Wrexham AFC surfaced. Ex-Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson told Sports Casting that the Portuguese player was more likely to buy the club than play for them!
“Anything’s possible in football today, even Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Wrexham! I would say that it’s highly improbable; he’s more likely to purchase the club than sign for them in my eyes.”
All this conjecture just underlines what level Wrexham AFC are operating at these days. Now, any “news” connected to the club is huge clickbait for those in search of the latest sensationalist story circling the internet.
The Fourth Wall
More prosaically but more importantly, the club has announced the council has recently granted permission to increase the capacity of the temporary Kop stand to 3,200, following a planning application submitted earlier this year.
The proposed expansion involves adding several rows of seating to the back and top of the existing stand, thereby creating an additional 681 seats and improving access to restroom facilities.
The temporary stand, occupying an area of 48,000ft2, accommodates approximately 2,300 fans and appeared in April 2024 to replace the Kop stand, which was demolished last year. It addressed the need for increased capacity arising from the club’s recent success and the ever-growing demand for tickets.
The council granted planning approval for this permanent stand, a hospitality area, and an exhibition space in January 2023. However, the club announced in June they would have to revise the project to enhance the supporter experience. The original plans had anticipated the completion of the final stand by August of this year.
