Skincare and the TikTok generation – I have had conversations with many parents about how their teen’s skin has suffered due to the use of products that are either too harsh or just inappropriate for this age group, including harsh acids, retinols and overly-abrasive exfoliants.
Significant Interest
In recent years, skincare has become a topic of significant interest among teenagers and pre-teens, primarily influenced by social media trends and the rise of beauty influencers. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are full of skincare routines and product reviews that promise flawless skin, creating a culture where teens feel pressured to adopt elaborate skin care regimes. While these platforms can provide valuable information, they often also encourage using unnecessary products that may not be suitable for adolescent skin.
Teenage years are characterised by hormonal changes that can lead to skin issues such as acne, oily skin, and sensitivity. With its visually appealing content, social media often promotes an idealised version of skincare, where influencers showcase an array of products, from serums to masks, claiming miraculous transformations. This can lead teenagers to believe that they need to invest in a multitude of products to achieve clear skin. However, such an approach can be counterproductive. Overloading the skin with products can irritate or disrupt its natural barrier, potentially exacerbating skin issues.
Skin Is Unique
Teenagers must understand that their skin is unique and what works for one person may not work for another. Rather than following trends, building a skincare routine based on individual skin needs is essential. A basic skincare regimen that emphasises simplicity and consistency is often more effective. Here are some fundamental practices teens should consider for maintaining healthy skin:
Cleansing: The cornerstone of any skincare routine is cleansing. Teens should use a gentle cleanser twice daily to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. They should always choose a cleanser that matches their skin type—whether it’s oily, dry, or combination—and doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils.
Moisturising: Regardless of skin type, moisturising is essential to keep the skin hydrated and balanced. Teens should opt for a non-comedogenic moisturiser that won’t clog pores. A lightweight, gel-based moisturiser can be effective for those with oily skin, while those with dry skin may benefit from a creamier formula. For those with blemish-prone skin, look for those containing pre and probiotics to boost the skin’s eco-flora and ingredients such as Zinc, which can help keep the blemishes at bay.
Sun Protection: Wearing sunscreen daily is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. Sun exposure can lead to premature ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer. Teens should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50, even on cloudy days!
Balanced Diet and Hydration: Healthy skin starts from within. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids can improve skin health. Drinking plenty of water is also crucial to keep the skin hydrated and flush out toxins.
Avoiding Picking and Touching the Face: Touching the face can transfer bacteria and oils from the hands, leading to breakouts. It’s also prudent to resist the urge to pick at acne, as this can cause scarring and prolong healing.
Consulting a Dermatologist: If skincare issues persist, consulting a dermatologist can provide personalised advice and treatment options tailored to the individual’s skin needs.
The Pressure of Trends
Ultimately, while social media can offer inspiration and tips, teens should approach skincare with a critical eye, focusing on understanding their own skin needs rather than succumbing to the pressure of trends. By adopting a simple, effective routine and practising healthy habits, teenagers can maintain their skin health without unnecessary products.
