The Cefn Soup Kitchen has become an essential part of life for many in the community of Cefn Mawr.
A Dedicated Group
The kitchen owes its existence to a dedicated group of individuals. These include Councillor Sonia Benbow-Jones, Tesco Community Champion David Roden, Cefn Community Council’s Donna Thornley, Cefn, Rhosymedre and Newbridge Community Association Chairlady Kristyna Morrison, and volunteer Kathy Eyre.
The kitchen provides more than just a warm meal; it offers a haven of connection, care, and compassion.
Before Christmas, the Cefn Soup Kitchen welcomed an extraordinary turnout. All of Cefn Community Council’s councillors and key community partners attending to experience the event firsthand. The Cefn Soup Kitchen has been a transformative support system for one service user. They said, “This place is a lifeline for me. It’s not just about the soup; it’s about having somewhere to go, people to talk to, and feeling like I’m part of something. I’d be lost without it.”
Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe echoed this sentiment. He said, “The service was fantastic, the soup was incredible, and the volunteers are just amazing. Di Iawn to all involved—what a truly inspiring effort!”
A Welcoming Space
Councillor Sonia Benbow-Jones describes the initiative as a vital community resource. She says, “The Cefn Soup Kitchen is more than just a place for a warm meal – it’s a welcoming space for people to come together, socialise, and support one another. In these colder months, it’s so important that no one feels isolated or left out in the cold. We invite everyone to enjoy some warmth, good company, and a delicious bowl of soup. Let’s make sure no one feels lonely this winter.”
The founders are also looking ahead. Kristyna Morrison, Chairlady of CRNCA, said, “The Cefn Soup Kitchen has become a wonderful hub for connection and support, especially during the winter months. As we look to the future, we’re excited to announce that we’re exploring ideas for a fresh, branded name that truly reflects the spirit of what we do. We’d love to hear your suggestions and have the community be part of shaping the next chapter of this fantastic initiative.”
The soup kitchen’s success lies in its ability to address not only physical needs but emotional ones as well. It provides a much-needed sense of belonging for those struggling with loneliness or financial hardships. The dedicated team of founders and volunteers ensures every guest feels valued and welcome, creating an atmosphere of care that sets it apart.
A Delicious Bowl of Soup!
The Cefn Soup Kitchen is open every Tuesday from 12 pm to 3 pm at the CRNCA in Cefn Mawr on Bro Gwyilm Lane next to the Premier Shop, offering a delicious bowl of soup, a bread roll, and a free drink – all served with warmth and kindness.
As the initiative continues to grow, the Cefn Soup Kitchen calls on the community to participate – whether by attending the sessions, sharing ideas for its rebranding, or spreading the word. For anyone looking for warmth, good company, and a delicious meal, the kitchen is ready to welcome you with open arms. Together, they hope to ensure they leave no one behind this winter.
