As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, Nightingale House Hospice is proud to launch the Longest Day, Lasting Care campaign. This ambitious fundraising initiative will run throughout spring and conclude on the longest day of the year, June 21st. The campaign aims to raise money to support the vital care services the hospice provides to patients and their families.
Longest Day, Lasting Care Campaign
Matching Every Pound Donated
Every donation made during the campaign will have double the impact, thanks to a generous group of trusts, foundations, and businesses, including Hartsheath Charitable Trust and Hobhouse Charitable Trust, who will match every pound donated.
The hospice will host a two-day fundraising marathon on 20th and 21st June to mark the grand finale of the campaign. The event will feature a 90s-style telethon and a series of community fundraising events.

The hospice is calling on supporters to get involved in various ways, including:
- Making a donation on their Just Giving page or via phone on 01978 314 292.
- Taking on the ’30 for 30 challenge’, a fundraising activity themed around the number 30, such as running 30 miles, swimming for 30 minutes a day, or giving up a treat for 30 days.
- Hosting a fundraising event at workplaces, schools, or clubs.
- Becoming a match funder, helping to double the public’s generosity and make an even more significant difference.
“Every Pound Is Valuable”
One of the supporters of this campaign, Mrs Fisher, has a special connection to Nightingale House Hospice. Her brother, John Owen Phillips, received respite care and was supported by the hospice team in his final days. Reflecting on her brother’s experience, she said, “I loved receiving a picture of John in his bed, being wheeled out into the garden to feel the sun on his face. The care he received and the support for his wife, Hazel, meant so much to us as a family. If you are able to give, every pound is valuable and counts.”

Laura Parry, Director of Income Generation, said, “The Longest Day, Lasting Care campaign is a unique opportunity for the community to come together and ensure hospice care is available for everyone with a life-limiting and progressive illness, now and in the future. Thanks to our incredible match funders, every donation will go twice as far, making an even greater impact on the lives of our patients and their families”.

Local Man Takes on Nightingale House 5k
A local man who once struggled to run completed a 5k run at Alyn Waters, all in support of Nightingale House Hospice.
Health Scare
Nigel Lewis, a 60-year-old quantity surveyor from Wrexham, has signed up for the Nightingale House 5k & 10k on Saturday, April 5th, marking his first-ever running challenge for charity. After a health scare last year, Nigel decided to turn his lifestyle around and improve his fitness. He joined the “Changing our Habits for Life” programme with the Rainbow Foundation in Penley, which introduced him to the BBC Couch to 5k plan. Though initially struggling, he stayed committed and has used the Nightingale House 5k as his motivation to push forward.
Talking about why he signed up for the event, Nigel said, “As I was about to give up, I saw the event on Facebook and thought, ‘That will motivate me!’. It certainly has! I’m now up to running 15 minutes straight with only a few weeks to go. It’s going to be quite a challenge, but I’m determined to be ready.”
Nigel has a personal connection to Nightingale House, having had relatives and friends cared for by the hospice. The thought of helping others during their most difficult times has been a major driving force in his journey.

Crossing the Finish Line Without Stopping
Nigel added, “For many, it’s too late to make changes, but I’m lucky enough to be still able to do something about it. Raising funds for Nightingale House so they can continue to provide their amazing care is something else that motivates me along the way.”
In addition to his running, Nigel has committed to 100 press-ups a day, long walks, cycling, and core strength exercises to boost his fitness. His goal on the day? To cross the finish line without stopping and exceed his £500 fundraising target.
Nigel joked before the race, “I won’t be winning any medals for speed, but improving my stamina and fitness while supporting a great cause is what really matters.”
Urging others to sign up for the event and experience the physical and mental benefits of taking on a challenge like this, Nigel said: “None of us know what tomorrow brings or when we or our families might need Nightingale House. Just go for it. You’ll improve your own health and fitness at the same time. It’s a win-win!”
