We saw records tumble as Wrexham AFC won four of their last six games to clinch promotion to the Championship – the second tier of the English football league. They, along with Birmingham City, made footballing history with their campaigns this season.
Jubilation
Wrexham AFC‘s 2024–25 season was a landmark season, marking their 160th year with a historic third consecutive promotion – an achievement unprecedented in the top five tiers of English football. Manager Phil Parkinson guided them to second place in League One, earning a spot in the Championship for the first time since the 1981–82 season. Wrexham demonstrated consistent form throughout the campaign, amassing 92 points but still finishing behind Birmingham City, who completed a season for the ages, smashing Reading’s English league record for points in a 46-game season with 111.

Sam Smith led the team’s scoring charts with 18 goals in 43 appearances. Ollie Rathbone, Elliott Lee and Steven Fletcher contributed eight league goals each.

Midfielder Ryan Barnett stood out as the primary playmaker, providing nine crucial assists. George Dobson and Max Cleworth were ever-present, with Cleworth even earning a spot in the League One Team of the Year alongside Barnett.

Thirty-six-year-old James McClean provided inspirational captaincy and seven assists.. He also maintained discipline on the field. This was despite some extraordinary behaviour from away fans, notably in the away game against Shrewsbury Town.
