We’re proud to introduce you to the winners of the last tranche of the Wrexham Recognition Awards for 2024 to 2025.

This year’s Wrexham Recognition Awards Competition is bigger and better than ever! It’s easy to apply or nominate somebody. Just consider whether they have a talent or make a difference in people’s lives or the local community.

Contact them on Facebook or Instagram (@fjonesinit), on X (@fjonesinit), or email info@fjonesinitiative.co.uk with your name, and they’ll take it from there.

Liam Cavanagh

Liam is a community hero who served in the British Army. He won the King’s Jubilee Medal, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and the Estonia Medal. His devotion to Wrexham goes beyond his military duties. He regularly attends veterans’ funerals to honour their service, and lends his time to community projects, such as building playground equipment at Gwenfro Valley Zipline, and has helped at Brymbo Heritage Trust.

Boxes of Sunshine

BoS was set up in 2022 by Kev and Lynsey Hill in memory of their daughter, Kirsten, who passed away in November 2021, aged 14, after a short and sudden battle with leukaemia. For the two years before her death, Kirsten had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, unrelated to leukaemia).

They set up the charity to bring a little sunshine into the lives of other young people living with chronic illnesses or long-term health conditions.

Caroline Platt

Caroline is the Managing Director of Platts Agriculture, Director on the Board of the Federation of Small Businesses, highly commended Director of Sustainability for Wales 2023, and Chair of the Wrexham Leadership Alliance and an active fundraiser for a number of charities, including The Hospice of the Good Shepherd and The Joshua Tree.

One of her most challenging fundraisers was The Jordan Trek for the Faith In Families charity, which she did with her daughter, Claudia, in November 2023. They walked 100k in five days, including climbing the highest mountain in Jordan, Jabal Umm ad Dami, in the baking heat of the Wadi Rum desert.

Stephanie Butterton

Stephanie’s daughter, Nicole, has nominated her mother. She says, “My mum is the most selfless and caring person I know. She has raised over £3,000 for various charities by hosting prize bingo evenings. Mum also raised £1,568 in aid of the Toy Appeal.

“She then visited a local store to purchase toys for all age groups to be donated to the appeal. My mum did the same last year when Mecca Bingo held a collection. She arrived with seven trolleys of toys. Mum has also held bingo nights for Chariotts, raising over £1,000.”

Wrexham Healthcare Choir

The choir consists of healthcare workers from Wrexham Maelor Hospital, including doctors, nurses, matrons, specialists, pharmacists, operational managers, and representatives from surrounding community sites. Since the choir’s inception in May 2024, it has grown from 9 to over 50 members.

The choir rehearses weekly on a Thursday after work. Feedback from members indicates that it has been truly life-changing, supporting them to remain well and continue their jobs with newfound energy.
