Geek Cabin is Wrexham’s go-to destination for PC repair, custom builds and honest tech advice. The journey to St George’s Crescent, however, was anything but straightforward.

A Clear Vision

In 2019, Chris and Steve combined forces with a clear vision. They wanted to establish a cost-effective, highly reliable mobile PC and electronics repair service for the local community. The concept was simple, but the expertise behind it was extensive. Chris had spent years honing his skills in intricate electronics repair. Steve, meanwhile, had managed the storefront at Micro Plus Computers for years before overseeing its in-house engineering department.

Steve spent a decade in that environment, developing a genuine passion for face-to-face customer service. Through those years, the pair recognised a major unmet need in the local tech industry. Customers needed approachable, transparent technical support. Therefore, they built Geek Cabin around one foundational ethos. They would provide high-level technical solutions without ever making a customer feel foolish. For Chris and Steve, if a customer couldn’t ask them an honest question, who else could they ask?

Pivoting Through a Pandemic

The business began inside a compact spare room at home. Chris and Steve set up their first workshop to handle tasks requiring high precision. These included delicate soldering, HDMI port replacements and complex PC hardware diagnostics. Word spread quickly, and as the workload surged, they searched for a physical storefront. They found a retail unit in Wrexham town centre and were close to signing the lease. However, global events intervened in early 2020.

COVID-19 put an abrupt end to those plans. Nevertheless, the setback opened a new avenue for growth. They pivoted into a larger space with oversized workbenches to handle an influx of hardware. Furthermore, they introduced a bespoke contact-free collect-and-return service that uses sealed tubs and rigorous PPE protocols. By advertising heavily on Facebook, demand skyrocketed. Indeed, throughout the lockdown periods, Geek Cabin found itself busier than ever. It kept the community connected while traditional shops remained shuttered.

The High Street Turnaround

The lifting of restrictions in 2021 brought an entirely new set of challenges. Suddenly, the local public had little interest in waiting indoors for a technician. People wanted to be out and about. As a result, the team noticed their remote-request pipeline emptying rapidly over just a few days. They needed a new plan, and fast.

The solution was a return to their roots. They needed a proper brick-and-mortar workshop where customers could walk in and speak directly to an expert. With invaluable help from Ruth Rees of Martin Rees Jewellers, Geek Cabin secured its first physical shop on Chester Street. Although capital was incredibly tight, they pooled resources to build out a functional workshop. The minimal trade-counter layout maximised repair space while giving them a vital face-to-face presence in the heart of Wrexham.

Chris then undertook the exhausting task of renovating the interior. The space had previously operated as a Thai massage parlour and they needed to remove numerous false walls. The Chameleon Design team made the complex fit-out considerably easier. They mapped out the space, sourced components and kept the project on track.

Building a Custom Future

As local high-street computer shops began to disappear, Geek Cabin expanded its retail inventory. It filled the gap by stocking specialist components that residents could no longer source locally. Moreover, it applied the same fair-pricing philosophy to retail as it had always applied to repairs.

Custom-built gaming PCs have since become a true speciality. What started as an experiment with a single secondhand tower quickly grew into a full line of bespoke systems. Today, Geek Cabin builds towers ranging from budget-friendly £400 home office units to elite gaming rigs exceeding £3,500. Consequently, its reputation for speed, reliability and component quality has grown steadily across the city.

Following a nine-month search, Geek Cabin signed the lease on its current home on St George’s Crescent in mid-2024. The building, a former Subway restaurant, required a top-to-bottom transformation. The team worked gruelling 12 to 15-hour days. They gutted the interior, rebuilt the rear wall and installed suspended ceilings. They also overhauled the electrical systems and ran over 900 metres of high-speed Ethernet cabling. Remarkably, all of this happened while they continued running daily repair operations.

Massive Snowstorm

They carried out the final move during a massive local snowstorm in late December 2024. Geek Cabin transferred operations within two days, without a single day of closure. Now firmly established in their state-of-the-art facility, Chris and Steve look forward to serving Wrexham for decades to come.
