The Welsh Healthcare Choir is inviting the local community to an evening of live music this Friday. NHS staff will perform at All Saints Church, Gresford, from 7pm to 9pm on 16 October. Better still, the charity concert will raise money for local charities.

About the Welsh Healthcare Choir

The choir was set up to bring together staff from every department and is based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. It gives colleagues a space to step away from the pressures of their working lives. At the same time, members meet people from across the hospital they might never otherwise work alongside.

Members include doctors, nurses, matrons, specialists, pharmacists and operational managers. Today, the choir is open to all NHS staff across Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. What unites them all is a love of music and the enjoyment of singing together.

Since it started in May 2024, the choir has grown from nine members to more than 50. Members rehearse every Thursday after work, in sessions affectionately known as “Therapy Thursdays”. In 2025, the choir was also celebrated in the Wrexham Recognition Awards.

A Chance Meeting on the Ward

The choir began with a chance encounter on the Prince of Wales Ward at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. While caring for a patient, staff discovered that the patient’s son was Aled Phillips, conductor of Johns’ Boys Male Voice Choir. Aled had visited the hospital daily for months while his family member received care there.

Medical Directorate Matron Rebecca Jones and Ward Manager Virma Pebeyre then founded the choir, originally called the Maelor Wellbeing Choir. Aled agreed to lead rehearsals as a way of thanking staff for their work. “It is just amazing to see the choir grow in numbers and in confidence,” he said.

Since then, the choir has performed at two Betsi Cadwaladr Staff Awards ceremonies at Venue Cymru. It also marked its first anniversary with a packed concert in May 2025. Last December, the choir staged its first Christmas concert at St Giles Church in Wrexham.

A Charity Concert With Something for Everyone

The concert on Friday 16 October promises something for everyone. Throughout the evening, the choir will perform a variety of musical styles and songs to suit all tastes. In addition, solo acts will perform alongside the choir throughout the night.

The night will showcase the versatility of the choir and the enthusiasm of its members. Most importantly, the money raised will support local charities. It is also a chance for the choir to share the positive message behind what they do.

All Saints Church, Gresford, makes a beautiful setting for an evening of live music. The church is famous for its bells, one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. Organisers are also hinting at some surprise performers on the night.

Why Singing Matters to Hospital Staff

Working in healthcare can be demanding, both physically and emotionally. That is why the choir values the positive impact singing can have on health and wellbeing. In fact, Rebecca Jones says members have reported a significant boost to their mental wellbeing.

Members also say singing together helps them stay well and carry on in their jobs with newfound energy. Rehearsals build friendships between people in very different roles. Growing from nine to more than 50 members shows just how much the choir means to staff.

So, come along on Friday and hear the voices behind the uniforms. You will discover how a little music can make a big difference. Tickets are available online, with a link on the Welsh Healthcare Choir Facebook page.
