A new partnership between the Lexus Wrexham Open and Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse brings tennis and horse racing together this September.
The Lexus Wrexham Open is the biggest women’s tennis tournament outside the grass-court season played in the UK this year. Organisers have now partnered with Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. As a result, the tournament will have its own race. The Lexus Wrexham Open Steeplechase runs at Bangor-on-Dee’s North Wales Business Day fixture on Friday, 4 September.
A Partnership Built for Tennis Fans
Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse has also signed up as a sponsor. It will back a new street food zone and Tie Break Café. Both features appear for the first time at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre in October. Rising Welsh star Mimi Xu won the tournament there last year.
Dave Courteen, promoter of the Lexus Wrexham Open, welcomed the collaboration. “We believe it’s important that sporting venues across North Wales work together to promote what they do,” he said. “We think we will become the first tennis tournament in the UK to have a horse race named after it.” He also thanked Bangor-on-Dee for its support. “Their support will help us make the new street food zone an excellent addition for tennis fans,” he added.
Two Sporting Events, One Growing Audience
Sam Martin, head of marketing and communications at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse, called the North Wales Business Day a first for the venue. “This is the first time we’ve run this type of race day to celebrate business in Wrexham and North Wales,” she said. “We’re also really proud to be working with Lexus Wrexham Open.”
She added that the partnership shows how local events can work together. “It will be great to see how two sporting events in the area can collaborate,” she said, “and make the most of both audiences.”
Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse
Bangor-on-Dee has hosted race meetings since 1859, over much the same course used today. The Lexus Wrexham Open, by contrast, only launched last year. This year’s W100 tournament returns to Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre from 18 to 25 October. The 700-seat Carden Park Arena will host world-class tennis throughout.
