The Bridge End Inn in Ruabon is celebrating victory in the Regional Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) competition. The owners can add this title to the others already adorning their trophy cabinet.

“It Means So Much to Us”

Matthew McGivern, the man in charge, is quick to credit his family for the success. His parents, Gill and Peter, have been at the helm of the cosy, rustic pub since 2008. “It means so much to us as a family, and we’ll continue doing what we do best moving forward,” said Matt, reflecting on the win and the pub’s journey back from the challenges the pandemic posed. “Everyone struggled a little with Covid, so it’s great to be in the position we’re in now.”

The pub, renowned for its warm atmosphere and commitment to real ale, offers seven hand-pumped ales, alongside three lagers, a selection of wines, spirits, and a range of bar snacks. Customers have responded positively to the pub’s way of going about their business, with Matt acknowledging: “It’s great to be recognised for selling great beer. Of course, the more you achieve, the more criticism you’re open to, especially when it’s across the whole of North Wales. However, overall, customers have been fantastic and really supportive.”

Magic Dragon Brewery

The Bridge End earned its place in the regional competition earlier this year by first claiming the Dee Valley section title. Just to underline the county’s high standard when it comes to public houses, fellow Wrexham establishment the Magic Dragon Brewery won the regional crown last year.

A CAMRA spokesperson praised the pub’s achievement: “The North Wales CAMRA regions vote for this. It’s an amazing achievement for an independent pub to get this far and shows an outstanding understanding of real ale and how to run a successful and popular pub. Great for Wrexham too!”

This latest win adds to a trophy cabinet that already includes Pub of the Year (POTY), Welsh POTY, and CAMRA National POTY, all awarded to The Bridge End in 2011.
