Sport, community spirit and local services are all making headlines across Cefn Mawr, with football tournaments, boxing events and grassroots football developments continuing to bring people together. Businesses there are also joining forces in a campaign to restore an important community service.

Boxing Show Heads to Cefn Mawr

Maelor Boxing Club ABC is preparing to host its Annual Show at George Edwards Hall on Saturday 9 May.

Doors will open at noon while the first bouts will begin at 1pm. Organisers expect a strong turnout for what promises to be a busy afternoon of grassroots boxing.

The event has received sponsorship support from SOS Plant Hire Ltd. In addition, the club has thanked Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe for helping to create its new emblem.

Local figure Butch Jones praised the club’s broader impact on the community. He said boxing helps young people develop confidence, discipline and commitment. Furthermore, he said events like the annual show give local people the chance to support emerging talent.

Dave Fawkes Appointed NEWFA Chief Executive

Elsewhere, the North East Wales Football Association has appointed local football figure Dave Fawkes as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Fawkes previously served as General Secretary and has also held roles as a referee and FAW Council member. Therefore, his appointment reflects years of involvement in grassroots football across Flintshire, Wrexham and north Powys.

Speaking after the announcement, Fawkes said football remains at the heart of local communities. He also said he wants to strengthen participation and help develop the game across the region.

The appointment comes at an important time for grassroots football in Wales. As a result, the association hopes to continue building stronger links between clubs, volunteers and communities.

School Football Tournament Praised

Young footballers from across the Cefn area also took part in the annual Derek Wright Football Competition. The tournament, organised by Cefn Community Council in partnership with Active Wrexham and Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, brought together several local schools for a day of competitive football.

Participating schools included Ysgol Cefn Mawr, Ysgol Acrefair, Ysgol Rhosymedre, Ysgol Min-Y-Ddol, Ysgol Pentre and Ysgol Garth. After a closely contested competition, Ysgol Pentre lifted the Ken Bathers Memorial Trophy, while Ysgol Cefn Mawr finished as runners-up.

Councillor Derek Wright described it as one of the closest tournaments ever witnessed. He praised the determination, sportsmanship and commitment shown throughout the day. Meanwhile, Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe said the standard of football had been excellent across all matches.

The Council added that the event continues to play an important role in encouraging young people to participate in sport and represent their schools.

Businesses Unite Over Post Office Campaign

Away from sport, businesses in Cefn Mawr are continuing efforts to secure the return of a local Post Office service. Following approval from Cefn Community Council, Community Development Officer Andrew Ruscoe visited businesses across the village to gather views and discuss possible solutions.

Business owners highlighted concerns about the impact the closure could have on older residents and people who rely on local banking and postal services. However, several businesses have already expressed interest in hosting a Post Office on their premises. Consequently, community leaders believe there is still hope for restoring the service.
