Three Wrexham schools are in the running for Tesco grants to help young people access healthy food, and local shoppers can decide which one receives the most. Gwersyllt Community Primary School, St Giles School and St Christopher’s School have been shortlisted in the latest round of Tesco’s Blue Token scheme, with grants of £500, £1,000 and £1,500 on offer to support children and young people’s access to nutritious food in the community.

Each school has its own plans for the money. Gwersyllt Community Primary School wants to teach children to cook healthy, nutritious meals using simple, affordable ingredients, building life skills and lasting habits for healthier choices. St Giles School hopes to create a dedicated forest and food area, an outdoor classroom where pupils can experience food growing, healthy eating and environmental awareness through hands-on learning. St Christopher’s School would use its grant to help students explore and try new foods in a safe and secure environment, while teaching valuable life skills along the way.
The grants form part of Tesco’s Fruit & Veg for Schools programme, which gives schools and community groups funding for healthy food projects as the retailer works to help more than one million schoolchildren get fruit and vegetables. This year, Tesco is particularly keen to back Wrexham initiatives with a clear food focus for young people, from breakfast clubs and holiday food provision to community pantries, cookery and nutrition sessions and food-growing projects.

“Every child deserves the chance to enjoy healthy food and build the foundations for a stronger future, so we want to support the brilliant schools and community groups in Wrexham helping children and young people access nutritious food,” said Claire de Silva, head of community at Tesco. “Whether that’s a breakfast club, a pantry, cookery sessions or a project that helps children grow and try new foods, we’d encourage local organisations to apply, and we’d love shoppers to get involved when the customer vote comes to their local store.”
Customers can vote for the cause they want to support by dropping the blue token they receive at the checkout into the relevant box as they leave the store, with grants awarded according to the number of tokens collected.
