Groundwork North Wales: Summer Fun 2019 – Hwyl yr haf 2019

Lead Mines, Minera

Minera Lead Mines and Venue in the Park at Alyn Waters, have lots of exciting activities taking place this summer! After the fantastic success of the school holiday activities in 2018 and at the start of 2019, Groundwork North Wales are also expanding the activities to Venue in the Park at Alyn Waters.

Minera Lead Mines and Alyn Waters Country Park offer a fantastic opportunity to get everyone outside in the natural environment. At Minera, you have 53 acres of grassland, wooded areas and archaeological sites to explore. This includes the restored beam engine house, winding engine and also the boiler houses.

Minera is not alone in sharing an interesting past. The site at Alyn Waters sits on top of a pile of sand, gravel and clay. Which was dumped by the melting glaciers at the end of the last ice age 13,000 years ago. It was not only sand, gravel and clay dumped by the glacier. In 1966, part of a woolly mammoth’s huge tusk was found (the tusk is now in the Liverpool Museum). The site is a rich variety of grassland flowers, including thousands of common spotted Orchids and plentiful numbers of Pyramid and Bee Orchids.
