Caring for Our Skin as We Age

Taking proper care of your skin during middle age is essential to keeping it looking healthy as you grow older.

Top Tips for Skincare

As we age, our skin begins to change. It can become drier, duller, less elastic, and more prone to wrinkles and age spots. Here are my tips for keeping skin in tip-top condition through middle age and beyond.

(1) Moisturise daily

Choose an oil-based rather than a water-based moisturiser to help keep your skin hydrated and to protect against fine lines and wrinkles.

(2) Protect your skin

A daily SPF is essential to protect against sun damage, as 80% of all visible signs of aging are directly linked to UV exposure. Yes, even when it’s dull outside! It’s the single biggest piece of advice I give to people who want their skin to be healthy and look good into old age.

(3) Use a gentle, oil-based cleanser

Avoid harsh soaps, which can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. Instead, look for cleansers that use natural oils such as jojoba as a base (the closest oil to those produced naturally by our skin). Oil-based cleansers are gentler on the skin and help to keep it balanced, clean and nourished at the same time. (And before you ask, no, they won’t make your skin greasy!)

(4) Exfoliate

Exfoliation is another important step in caring for middle-aged skin. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, which can make skin look dull. However, it’s important to use a mild exfoliating product because harsh scrubs can damage and even tear the surface of the skin. I personally love to exfoliate with AHAs and BHAs (found in fruit acids) rather than using a physical scrub as I just pop some on before bed and wake up with super-smooth skin.

(5) Know your ingredients

Look for products that contain:

  • Antioxidants, which fight free radicals, environmental pollutants, and other skin stressors;
  • Vitamin C, which brightens and reduces age spots;
  • Hyaluronic acid, which plumps skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines;
  • Ceramides, which keep the skin barrier intact and healthy.

A Healthy Lifestyle

In addition to using the right products, it’s also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of sleep, and avoiding smoking help you to keep your skin looking its best. Regular exercise also keeps your skin looking healthy by increasing circulation and improving elasticity.

Finally, it’s important to remember that everyone’s skin is different, so if you have questions about which products to use or if you’re concerned about skin changes, please give me a shout and I’ll be happy to help. With the right products and lifestyle changes, you can keep your skin looking healthy and youthful in your middle years and beyond.
