The Friends of Wrexham Cemetery have announced the release of Welsh Family History Research: A Beginner’s Guide to encourage and facilitate genealogical research by the general public. The guide was written and will continue to be updated by the Friends of Wrexham Cemetery’s volunteer genealogy assistant.

Visitors to the cemetery office will find copies of the guide next to two computers generously provided by Wrexham Council. Use of the computers, including access to ancestry.com and findmypast.com, is free.

Jayne Alton, Chairperson of Friends of Wrexham Cemetery, said, “There is a great deal of history to be discovered in Wrexham cemetery. We hope our new guide motivates people not only to learn more about their ancestors buried here or not. But also to visit the cemetery and walk the garden paths, noting the architecture, the symbols and sentiments on headstones.

“We have more than family history here. We have military history. History of occupations, of religions, of cultures. Wrexham Cemetery is an open-air museum if you think about it.”

Cemetery and Crematorium Attendant Adrian Howells observed, “I’m quite enthusiastic about the genealogy guide. When people come here, they enjoy telling the staff about their ancestors. But they also have many questions we haven’t always been able to help with. Now visitors will be able to get some answers.”

Opening Times

The Wrexham Cemetery office is open from 1 April to 31 October, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm, except bank holidays, and weekends, 10 am to 6 pm, including bank holidays. From 1 November to 31 March, the cemetery hours are 10 am to 4 pm.

The Ruabon Road entrance gate and the Bersham Road entrance gate are locked 15 minutes prior to the official closing time.

Friends of Wrexham Cemetery promotes the care, preservation, and improvement of Wrexham Cemetery as a place of historical value and interest and as a green space for the public benefit. The Friends hold special events throughout the year, including Open Days, walks, and lectures, and will soon offer occasional individual genealogy appointments, all announced on wrexhamcemeterystories.com/friends-wrexham-cemetery.
