2025 sees Erddig Nordic Walkers (ENW) celebrate 10 years of Nordic Walking in the Wrexham area. Since starting in 2015 with a membership of 30 walkers doing one walk per week at Erddig, they have grown to a membership of 260+, offering three regular walks per week across nine venues, with approximately 120-140 walkers participating every week.
Local and National Recognition
They have gained local and regional recognition as a leading Nordic Walking group and continue to attract members from North Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire. The group has six nationally qualified Nordic walking instructors and another 17 trained walk leaders. All instructors and leaders are first aid trained, and with the safety of walkers in mind. All our walks are risk-assessed.
They offer free training for new members on the first Saturday of every month, with all equipment provided. There is no joining or membership fee, but they charge £1 per walk, making their activities accessible and inclusive.
Nordic Walking offers a complete workout that improves individual fitness and general health benefits. The extra benefits include positive mental health, well-being, mindfulness, combatting loneliness and bereavement support.
Social and Emotional Support
Probably the most significant aspect of being part of the group is the social and emotional support offered through developing friendships and social integration within a safe and secure community environment that emphasises FUN and enjoyment. This has become a core value of the group.
They publish a quarterly calendar of events that offers the opportunity to plan and structure your individual needs. In addition to the three regular walks per week, they offer a variety of social events like bingo nights and quizzes. The group also goes on their celebrated “Away Days”. These are longer day walks to The Mawddach Trail, Colwyn Bay to Llandudno (Pier to Pier Walk) and Llyn Brenig, for example.
They have not only increased their membership, but they have also grown in reputation and now hold annual celebratory events (Christmas, a summer picnic and a visit to Powys Castle visit) and make yearly contributions to local and national charities.
Developing Partnerships
Future plans see them increasing accessibility to walks and outreach via social media. They also aim to maintain and develop partnerships with local and regional organisations, such as AVOW, Erddig and National Trust, North Wales Police and others promoting the positive impact of Nordic Walking and the membership of an active and vibrant community group. They hope to celebrate their 10th anniversary with an event at Erddig (NT) in mid-July.
The group is very thankful to its members and supporters.
